What is the opposite of a megaproject? Maybe a microproject? Whatever it is, it probably applies to the installation of these mini rope bridges in The Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire. After some diseased ash trees were removed, the local dormice found their habitat had become disconnected. As dormice don't like to venture to ground level to move from one tree to another, two 20 metre rope bridges were constructed and installed. Cameras have been installed to monitor whether the tiny rodents actually use them. 💁 Our two rewilding projects, Wilder Little Duxmore and Wilder Nunwell, on the Isle of Wight are helping to reduce nutrients entering the Solent. 💪 These two sites have a pivotal role in reducing the nutrient pollution in the Solent. Some of our most sensitive marine habitats and wildlife are being affected by the nitrates leaching out into our watercourses which then causes algal blooming in our coastal environment. 👉 Since taking on these sites we have ceased putting any inputs onto the land, giving it the time to recover. This means that no fertiliser inputs are entering our watercourses and in turn this is reducing the chemicals entering one of our most sensitive habitats and improving the health of our soils benefiting the wildlife on land too. 📽️ Find out more about our rewilding projects and how the work we are doing on land is helping improve our marine environment here: https://lnkd.in/edyceg9J

We are excited to announce Callan Marine's latest endeavor, the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, Texas, West Galveston Bay Barrier Island Reconstruction Project. This project aims to restore eroded barrier islands in West Galveston Bay and protect the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. The project involves constructing nearly 3,500 linear feet of rock breakwater with over 19,500 cubic yards of rock, sourced from Genevieve, Missouri. Additionally, we will fabricate and install 795 reef balls to provide wave protection and serve as enhanced marine habitats.   One of the project's major components is dredging approximately 360,000 cubic yards of fill material from the borrow area, Placement Area 64. This material will be carefully placed to rebuild the interior portion of the barrier island, restoring lost habitat for local coastal wildlife.   The project does come with its unique set of challenges, such as access to the site. Land access is restricted due to features of the land, such as agricultural irrigation channels and bridges. To overcome this, we will barge a dredge to the site in multiple pieces, place it inside the borrow pit with a crane, and dredge from within the borrow pit after assembly is completed. This approach will help to preserve the integrity of the existing levee. Additional pumps will be required to bring sea water into the site to flood the area and provide water for dredging.   While the current state of the barrier island poses no immediate ecological concerns, as it has eroded significantly, environmental considerations are always a priority for Callan Marine.
