Say hello to Ferdie, our fearless founder! 👋🏾 Q) When did you first hear about the world of DRR? A) I started my career as a medical assistant in Franschhoek. I experienced the “blood, broken bones and tears” of injured and dying people firsthand on a daily basis and realised I would like to be doing more to prevent or mitigate the suffering of living creatures in the first place. I spent time moving from industrial accident prevention, to emergency preparedness and business continuity management in Eskom before founding DMS. Q) What problem did you hope DMS would solve when you founded it? A) Generating risk profiles and building the capacity of local communities was not being done. Back then, the focus of Civil Defence was on disaster response and not on risk reduction. I created DMS to offer life-changing DRR training and solutions to key role-players in the public and private sector. We also offered our experience to the newly created Disaster Management Function at the time to influence the shift to disaster risk reduction. We helped integrate the 5-point plan into the National Disaster Management Framework. Q) What does a normal day at DMS NPC look like for you? A) I’m always on the lookout for local and international challenges that we could assist in solving. Q) What is the best part about the work you do at DMS NPC? A) Networking, exploring new technology and linking the dots. Developing solutions is like building puzzles…one piece at a time… Q) What kind of impact do you hope to make through DMS? A) We hope to continue to influence decision-makers to create informed DRR policies and plans and use proper monitoring systems to ensure that they are implemented correctly. Q) If you weren't A DRR specialist, where would you be now? A) Picking up pebbles on the Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro during peak season ⛱️ . . . #DisasterRiskReduction #DoMoreWithDMS #BTS #MeetTheTeam #SupplyChainManagement
