https://lnkd.in/g-YmhQ9f A throwback from exactly 6 years from today when I took the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). I was one of the 7 candidates who took N2 (the second hardest level in JLPT). Only 2 candidates from the 7 passed the level including myself. Back when I studied my Japanese course in high school, it wasn't really an easy road. I didn't have any prior advantage like my other classmates who are learning the same language - I started off knowing zero Kanji while my Chinese peer knows thousands on his first day in class - Native speakers (who were mostly half-Japanese) joined the class during my second half of learning, so they had a better edge at speaking naturally as they grew up in a Japanese household - Some students just had more learning experience than me - I also was lacking in social skills, which still affected my public speaking But I chose to not give up in spite of the overwhelming odds. I doubled my effort to make up for all the advantages that I didn't have. I spent hours focusing on Kanji just to even the odds with my Chinese peers. I've been taking nearly a hundred Kanji tests and thankfully didn't fail a single one. I managed to earn the highest test score in class even against my native speaker classmates. I remembered having trouble speaking with a native speaker on the reception table and ended up embarrassing myself, but that was what shaped my Japanese speaking skills today where I am now able to speak more naturally like a native speaker. And also, This JLPT from 2017 was actually my second attempt after failing my previous one in 2016. The point I'm trying to make here is that I'm not some kind of a Japanese Language Superman. I'm not the perfect all-knowing Japanese language genius like how most people imagined me to be today. I have my flaws, like an actual human being. My language proficiency was also thanks to my Sensei who guided me in my journey throughout the 4 years. It was through her proper teaching regime that I could achieve the best I could. Whenever I tackled my learning method incorrectly and nearly going astray, she was there to put me back on the right track. My endeavors wouldn't mean anything if it weren't for her proper guidance. Anyway, I just wanted to share a past story of my journey as a student in Japanese Language. And this also serves as a lesson in life: Don't give up even if you find yourself at odds against your other peers/competitors. You CAN overcome all your adversaries as long as you put your mind into achieving your goals. Thanks for reading through my long post. And whoever has helped me in my journey, I sincerely thank you too.

Happy to share that I passed my JLPT N1 exam this year. For those unfamiliar, the Japanese Language Proficiency Test evaluates Japanese language skills with exams on a difficulty scaling from N5 to N1, with N1 being the most difficult exam. There's a saying that really resonates with me: “If you talk to a person in a language they understand, that goes to their head. If you talk to them in their own language, that goes to their heart.”. Whilst this is already motivating enough to learn a language, I also believe this truly captures the distinction between communicating in a language solely through translation apps and genuinely speaking the language. Beyond the N1 level, I think there is still much left to learn of the Japanese language though. As I’ll be moving to Japan soon in the new year (more on this later 😉), it will be a perfect opportunity to further deepen my understanding of both the language and the country. As a final note, the Japanese language is so beautifully complex, yet simple at times. I encourage anyone to try to learn a bit of Japanese if you have the time, even if you are just going on a short holiday there. With the number of language learning apps around, you can easily start and try learning Japanese yourself with just a couple of minutes per day. You’ll never forget the satisfaction of recognizing the complex written characters when they seemed impossible to understand at first. (I took the picture below during my most recent trip in Japan last year around this season. The picture is taken in Sendai.) #jlpt #japan #languagelearning #japaneselanguage
