This is a great article from The Economist about the strides carbon recycling technology is making... or as they say "'carbon utilisation', a neglected area of climate tech that is heating up"! Total decarbonization is a myth. Our material world is made of carbon--from the clothes we wear and the sterile medical packaging that keeps us safe, to the fuel that powers our cars and planes and the food we put on our plates--but we can sustainably source the carbon found in abundance above ground to make the things we need rather than perpetuating a linear "take-make-waste" system with virgin fossil carbon. That's where carbon recycling comes in, and we are proud to have been doing this at commercial scale since 2018. "ArcelorMittal, a European steel colossus, has built a €200m ($220m) carbon-utilisation plant at a steelworks in the city of Ghent in Belgium. The facility relies on novel equipment made by LanzaTech, a biotech firm based in Illinois, which uses a biocatalyst to turn the carbon-rich waste gas from the blast furnaces into ethanol. This can then be used to make sustainable aviation fuel or chemicals. In 2022 LanzaTech secured $500m in funding from Brookfield Asset Management, a Canadian asset manager, to scale up its business. Recently it was jointly awarded up to $200m by America’s U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to convert CO2 captured at a petrochemical plant into ethylene, a useful feedstock. Jennifer Holmgren, LanzaTech’s boss, reckons replacing 'fossil carbon' in supply chains is 'a $1trn addressable market'." New portfolio company: heading the net-zero revolution! We are excited to welcome Cyclize to the UVC Partners family🎉. We lead the company’s seed funding round of EUR 5 million with complementary investments from HTGF | High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), Aurum Impact, UnternehmerTUM Funding for Innovators, and renowned business angels including Dr. Klaus Schäfer, former CTO of Covestro also being Chairman of Cyclize's Advisory Board. How is Cyclize transforming the chemical industry?🌎♻️🌱 ✔️Cyclize uses an advanced plasma-based method that turns different kinds of plastic waste into synthetic gas, which competes economically with gas made from fossil fuels and can substitute it. ✔️The transition to net zero production unlocks opportunities for new markets in Europe. By preserving the majority of the value chain, current processing facilities can remain operational, ensuring cost-effectiveness in production. ✔️Cyclize has already sparked interest from both industry and politics. Our principal Amanda Birkenholz leading the investment at UVC Partners knows: “Cyclize's technology solves two problems of our civilization. Currently, only nine percent of globally produced plastic is recycled. The remainder is not further utilized and ends up in continuously growing landfills. However, the energy contained therein can be significantly used by Cyclize for the reforming process, simultaneously reducing electricity demand and operational costs significantly. Especially considering the current energy price policy, companies can secure a decisive advantage with Cyclize, utilizing a resource that has been scarcely used so far.” ✔️Jana Petry, our associate on the investment, adds: “We believe that the upside potential is massive and Cyclize could revolutionize the chemical industry. Having looked at many startups in the chemicals segment has convinced me of the high need for disruption in this sector. I’m more than happy to support the team in solving these current pain points for a more sustainable future!” Great to have you with us Dominik Novakovic, Jan Stein, Maike Lambarth, Stephan Renninger, and the whole team!🤩 👉Read the press release: https://lnkd.in/dNya59jm 💐We thank all of the participants in this journey and congratulate everybody: Dr. Klaus Schäfer, Andreas Gocke, Dr. Ludwig Weiß, Benjamin Erhart, Johannes Weber, Mauricio Fleischer Acuña, Miki Yokoyama, Jan Hendrik Heihoff, Inga vom Holtz, Maria Poursaiadi, Tobias Jacob #portfolionews #newinvestment #investors #VC #startups #founders #cyclize #climatetech #netzero #defossilization #co2

CORE IS TAKEN OVER! Boom! Back from vacation, and the first post is big news straight away! Butter Bridge BV has taken over CORE CHANGEMAKERS, specifically everything we do with high temperature systems like #MAGMA and #FOURNOS! And with the other technologies like #TEMNOS being sold as we speak, we had to make a tough decision. Do you continue with new projects from scratch, or is it time to end it on a high note? After careful consideration we chose the latter. We don't wanna let down students halfway the semester if the projects don't work out, or lose good people in the process by having too few challenges for the more experience members. CORE CHANGEMAKERS stops. Our last dance will be hosting three mini symposiums during the Vakbeurs Recycling focused on solarpanel #reuse & #recycling, #batteryrecycling and circularity in infra. In the coming weeks we will share posts looking back at our biggest achievements in the past 5/6 years, as well as posts about the speakers for the event! For now, read the article from Innovation Origins, remember the good times and talk to you again soon! And join us in thanking all the partners, customers and students that were part of our journey! https://lnkd.in/eWB_vW3J
