The phrase, “it’s just business, nothing personal,” has always been one of the most frustrating tropes I’ve heard in business. It’s also a complete cop out. Business is about relationships and those relationships are one of the main ways that companies grow. Every relationship carries some sort of emotion with it as well. Anyone who tries to sell that business is unemotional and not personal wants to absolve themselves from guilt for doing something that directly impacts someone else that they have some kind of relationship with. It’s unemotional for them because they choose to not feel bad. It’s an excuse that makes it okay to do the wrong thing by humans. It’s never “just business” when people get harmed, whether that be emotionally, financially or otherwise. Anyone who tells you the opposite is trying to make whatever they are doing, or are about to do, ok for themselves, not you.
