What's not to love about small sided practices? Lots of involvements and energy. But there are a few pitfalls if coaches aren't careful.... Rugby coaches have rightly learned from their round ball counterparts to use 'rondo' practices to re-create some of the pieces of the game day experience. This is an article I recently contributed to Rugby Coach Weekly, to provoke some thought around the use of this great tool with a few considerations. This is a heartwarming story only because of the outcome, and thank goodness for that! Any other outcome would be nothing less than tragic. Not to take away from the heroic actions and love this young boy demonstrated for his sister, but as someone involved in the industry where it is my mission to provide lasting solutions for dog owners and their canine companions - I want to unequivocally say that there is no place for half measures when approaching the training, selecting, and placing of dogs into society. There is a growing movement across the world that implies that to train a dog for reliable and safe behavior with any consequence is a bad thing (especially when using training aids to achieve those results). Well, not only is that patently wrong, but in situations where dogs exist without proper behavior and impulse control…we leave innocent individuals at risk to harm because of the shared public (and private) space we all occupy oftentimes with dogs. Any organization promoting falsehood about training with only “positive methodology” as a way to address canine misbehavior or ones that refuse to acknowledge a dog for the animal it is should be immediately ignored as an authority or subject matter expert with respect to dogs with problematic behaviors or histories. So, I'm a huge MMA/UFC fan, and fight nights are the highlight of my month. As with many aspects of life, I often take the time to meditate on the philosophical nature of hobbies and life events. Noche UFC incorporated a celebration of Mexican history, culture, and independence, and that is what got me thinking about why I love combat sports and the community. First, MMA heavily encourages an honor culture where athletes know they are competitors, not enemies. Second, combat sports are inherently diverse because every culture and civilization has had a warrior class (knights, samurai, cuāuhtli, nihang, etc.). This is truly a sport for everyone. Third, relatedly to the second point, diversity is also encouraged via allowing fighters to openly celebrate their religion and culture, unlike most other sports. Fourth, UFC assiduously promotes freedom of thought and speech, which is incredibly appreciated considering how so many other sports oppose that. Finally, MMA requires dedication and passion for an exceptional skillset, and I think more security professionals should take that mindset. Especially because this dedicated skillset is one more people need to know to improve their lives (physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually). #MondayThoughts #MMA #UFC #Security #Mindset
