Researcher by day and entrepreneur by night, but innovation never ends. It has been a privilege to learn more about carbon cycle in arctic areas and how the global ecosystems are interconnected. It is crazy how fast the changing climate is distroying the galcier systems and how huge impact it has on marine life and - eventually- also humans. Novel ways to monitor environment and these changes are indeed needed to further understand and predict their net impact to our future. In depth interview by Emeric Babut du Marès about my role in research in connection to iC3 Polar Research Hub (Centre for ice, Cryosphere, Carbon and Climate)
INTERVIEW: Jan Viljanen talks about developing new monitoring technologies for polar research, kayaking, and why becoming a professor is not his top goal. “My project involves developing a laser-based measurement method for monitoring iron levels in glacial waters. This method allows for continuous, real-time monitoring which is crucial for understanding how iron flows from glaciers to oceans.” “I'm a Marie Curie (MSCA) postdoctoral fellow, but becoming a professor isn’t my main goal. My focus is on conducting meaningful science and mentoring new scientists. It's more about the journey and impact than the title.” “I enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and white-water kayaking, especially in Norway, which is a hotspot for kayaking enthusiasts.” “My advice on applicants for #MSCA fellowships is to focus on finding a good match where you can both contribute and grow. It's about synergy between your goals and what the institution can offer.” Full interview with Jan Viljanen here: https://lnkd.in/dUJuDs-F #iron #Arctic #Antarctica

Five HIMB graduate students trotted the globe in early July to participate in the European Coral Reef Symposium (ECRS), held every four years to promote the missions and objectives of the International Coral Reef Society (ICRS). ECRS is hosted in a rotating selection of European countries by the European Chapter of the International Coral Reef Society (ICRS), and the 2024 ECRS convened in Naples, Italy, at the Città della Scienza and the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station. "The 2024 theme was closing the knowledge disparities among tropical, temperate, and cold-water coral reefs," shared symposium organizers, "with the aim of uniting coral reef scientists, researchers, conservationists, policymakers, and reef managers to showcase the most recent research discoveries and facilitate the exchange of vital insights. This will play a pivotal role in informing international and national policies related to the preservation and sustainable management of coral reefs." All five HIMB participants presented their research. “It was a great opportunity to present in Naples, filled with connections old and new forged in espresso,” shares Callie Stephenson, a Graduate Assistant in HIMBʻs Donahue Lab. “We talked science, culture, and community over 4 days while attending talks and poster sessions. My biggest takeaway is the interconnectedness of all flavors of science to create the greater understanding of our oceans we will need to weather global climate change. Many talks focused on the fourth global bleaching event, on how corals responded, or intervention strategies. Others addressed local stressors, or larger questions about population connectivity. I left inspired to ask new questions and approach my own science from a new viewpoint.” #oceanconservation #conservation #marinebiology

Ph.D. Position in Biology/Paleontology at The University of Alabama The recently NSF-funded project “Energetic Controls on Marine Benthic Community Structure in Space and Time” aims to (1) evaluate how productivity affects the energetic and trophic structure of marine benthic communities on either side of the modern Isthmus of Panama, where there is now a strong contrast between the high-productivity, upwelling-dominated regime of the eastern Pacific and the low-productivity, low-seasonality regime of the Caribbean (2) use this knowledge to evaluate the fossil record of Caribbean benthic ecosystems before, during, and after the uplift of the isthmus during which planktonic productivity decreased in the Caribbean, and (3) relate ecosystem changes driven by productivity shifts to the well-documented Caribbean extinction event ~2 Ma. This is a project in collaboration with colleagues and their students/postdocs at the Ohio State University (Dr. Jill Leonard-Pingel), the University of California Berkeley (Dr. Seth Finnegan), and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (Dr. Aaron O’Dea). One key component of this project is to assess biotic interactions such as predator-prey interactions using fossil and modern molluscan assemblages from both sides of the Isthmus of Panama. Dr. Adiel Klompmaker is recruiting a PhD student for the Fall 2025 semester with a background in biology, paleontology, and/or geology who has an interest in biotic interactions and quantitative methods. While the study will use pre-existing collections, there is a trip to Panama included. For interested candidates, please get in touch with Dr. Adiel Klompmaker (aaklompmaker@ua.edu), preferably sending along a CV. The student will be supported for 5 semesters as a graduate research assistant and as a graduate teaching assistant for the remainder of the PhD program. Conference support is provided. The student will be part of the Department of Biological Sciences or the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Alabama depending on the background of the student. Apply to one of these departments through https://lnkd.in/g7_iQe5z Applications are due on 10 December 2024. #geology #biotic #biology

RGSSA Director Professor #IainHay was able to attend this year's Australian Academy of Science's (AAS) National Committees for Science meeting in his capacity as Chair of the National Committee (NC) for Geographical Sciences. Held in Canberra's amazing Shine Dome, the meeting brought together Chairs of 18 NCs (plus the Co-Chairs of Future Earth Australia) for briefings and discussions on: AAS International Programs; the ISC Regional Focal Point for Asia-Pacific (including the new Pacific Academy of Sciences); Educational support for schools; AAS Fellowships (noting that there are no Geography Fellows amongst the in the current contingent of 616 Fellows!); EMCR Forum; Awards; Engagement; AAS role in science policy and science advice; and the current Strategic Examination of Australia’s R&D sector (SERD). In discussions the 18 National Chairs were asked to consider some very interesting challenges including: · How will your discipline contribute to Australia by 2035? · What areas of your discipline are seeing greatest demand? · In your discipline, how reliant is Australian on collaboration and infrastructure from other countries? · How will international science engagement in your discipline change over the next 10 years? · What research infrastructure does your discipline need in the next decade? · What opportunities are there for disciplines to build stringer connections with the ISC and Asia-Pacific regions? A great meeting. #geography #science #research

Yay! The #Ecological #Society of #America (#ESA) conference is here in Long Beach, California! I kicked off the event by co-facilitating the short course “#Introduction to #Sparse #Modelling” with @Amy Patterson. It was my first time leading a short course at #ESA, and the experience was incredible. I loved the course's interactive format and the thoughtful discussions participants contributed during the activities. #Key #Takeaways: 📌Sparse modeling is good for large datasets. 📌It is effective when the number of observations is much lower than the number of predictors. 📌It helps identify the most important variables related to the response variable. 📌It enables the creation of a simple and interpretable model. I can't wait to do this again next year! But before that, our colleagues at the #Modelscapes #Consprtium plan to hold the workshop at the #Association for the #Sciences of #Limnology and #Oceanography (#ALSO) conference in Charlotte, North Carolina next year. Later this evening, I attended the opening plenary session, ‘An Unexpected Part: How Partnering Outside Academia Changed My Teaching and Career,’ presented by #Jackie #Grant. Jackie's story was inspiring, highlighting how she persevered through five rejections before landing a modestly paid faculty position and then transitioning from academia to industry. At the Welcome Networking Reception, I connected with several researchers, including fellow Nigerians. I'm excited about this year's #ESA – #Supporting #Ecologists #Throughout #Their #Careers! #ESA #Ecology #Evolution #Ecosystems #Environement #Research #Communication
