Did you know... The first solar panel was invented in 1883 by Charles Fritts, a New York inventor, who coated selenium with a thin layer of gold. However, functional solar panels weren't available until 1954 when scientists in the US created them using silicon. These first solar cells could only power small electrical devices, but over the years and with lots of development, solar panels are now more efficient and can power homes and even businesses! #solarpanels #solarenergy #cleanerelectric #greenenergy #energyefficient #SolarInstallation #climatechange #solarpower #scientificresearch

Imagine a scenario where, instead of charging your electric car for long periods at EV charging stations, you simply exchange spent nanofluid with a newly charged one in under 5 minutes and head onto the highway with enough electricity stored to drive 400 miles! This technology is made possible by Nanoelectrofuel (NEF) flow batteries. Ever since the first patent for flow batteries was filed in 1879, the technology has been restricted to stationary energy storage applications such as for the grid or behind-the-meter storage due to its low energy density (20 Wh/kg for Vanadium redox flow batteries), which is one-tenth of that of commercial Lithium-ion batteries (160-250 Wh/kg). However, a new type of flow battery called the nanoelectrofuel battery aims to address this issue by using an energy-dense suspension of nanoparticles (nanofluid) as the electrolyte. With this approach, NEF flow batteries combine the characteristics of energy-dense solid-state batteries with the flexibility of liquid-based flow batteries. Influit Energy, a spinout of Argonne National Laboratory and Illinois Institute of Technology, is developing a battery with a targeted energy density between 550 to 850 Wh/kg. This is significantly higher than the current lithium-ion batteries, making it suitable for electric mobility.
