Simulation is of a pulsed laser welding an Al alloy t-joint with beam defocus, tracking temperature and melt volume. I always find it interesting to watch the "stacked dime" effect created during welding processes driven by metal convection and solidification with the interplay of recoil and marangoni forces. It's a very challenging phenomena to model given the truly multiphysics nature. In the webinar next week my colleague Garrett Clyma is going to go into the detail of how we do this stuff in FLOW-3D WELD. #welding #manufacturing #metals

The reciprocating sliding motion under pressure result in mtallurgical adhesion at the metal contact interfaces without melting. Such a sloud-state binding is advantegous for joining dissimilar metals such as #copper and #Aluminum commonly used materials for #lithium batteries. "Additive manufacturing is just more complicated welding." I was happy to hear someone say this the other day, because in many ways this is totally true. Especially when we are looking at the physics involved in laser welding vs laser powder bed fusion for instance, virtually the same in terms of melting and solidification. However, aside from the fact that AM is like welding hundreds or thousands of times over for the same part 😵 it's also pretty unusual that someone would intentionally operate in keyhole mode to achieve this fusion. Welding on the other hand is almost always done in keyhole regimes which comes with a different set of difficulty in controlling keyhole stability to avoid defects such as porosity formation. On May 9th we're going to host a webinar discussing modeling for laser welding processes and look at how researchers have been using FLOW-3D WELD to design weld schedules and optimize process parameters to control tricky process dynamics such as keyholing.
