Being a public policy student has opened a lot of doors for me in terms of thinking and observing things. My recent visit to Batam, Indonesia highlighted the country's impressive efforts to protect nature. Key initiatives are transforming Indonesia's forests into net carbon sinks by 2030, as part of its Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). 4 Major Takeaways 1. Strong Government Leadership: Provincial governments are integrating environmental conservation into development plans 2. Decentralized Forest Management: Forest Management Units (FMUs) are balancing economic and environmental priorities, benefiting over 110,000 community members. 3. Land Tenure Security: Projects are securing land rights for Indigenous Peoples, protecting forests and improving livelihoods. 4. Tailored Local Solutions: Customised strategies are ensuring sustainable forest management across different regions. These efforts not only reduce emissions but also enhance community livelihoods and protect biodiversity. Let's learn from Indonesia's proactive approach to sustainable development and environmental conservation. #sustainability #development #environment #biodiversity

🌿Indonesia's Mangrove Mission: A Beacon of Hope for Climate Action🌊🛡️ 🌏 Did you know? Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, houses 23% of the globe's mangrove ecosystems, making it a crucial battleground against climate change and coastal erosion. Yet, the relentless march of urban expansion and agricultural encroachment threatens these vital guardians of the coastline. 🌱 In a bold move, the Indonesian government has pledged to rehabilitate 600,000 hectares of mangrove forests by 2024. This ambitious project isn't just about restoring an ecosystem; it's about protecting biodiversity, supporting local livelihoods, and building climate resilience. 🤝Embracing community involvement, Indonesia is pioneering the use of citizen science to monitor mangrove health, leveraging mobile technology to bridge the gap between local knowledge and scientific research. Let's applaud Indonesia's commitment to preserving its "climate guardians." It's a powerful reminder of the role ecosystems play in our survival and the importance of collective action in environmental stewardship. #sustainabilityleadership #climateaction #mangroverestoration #sustainability #Indonesia #conservationefforts #leadership

Glad to share that I recently published another article on the WWF Indonesia website, titled "Menyelamatkan Areal NKT-SKT Yang Tersisa, Pemkab Sintang Terbitkan Perbup 70 Tahun 2023". The article covers the socialization event for Sintang District's Regent Regulation No. 70/2023 on indicative mapping and management of High Conservation Value (HCV) and High Carbon Stock (HCS) areas. The regulation identifies 1.17 million ha of HCV areas and 978,000 ha of HCS areas in Sintang, serving as a reference for environmental documents, spatial planning, and conservation area management. Key points included the need for sustainable development strategies, multi-stakeholder collaboration in implementation, and integrating HCV-HCS areas into spatial planning for environmental preservation. The article highlighted presentations from government officials, WWF Indonesia, and inputs from local stakeholders. For more detail, I invite you to access the article at the link below (can be accessed in English and Indonesian) : https://lnkd.in/gfrEVvSM

It was very inspiring to get some time with the world youth parliament for water. Melati Wijsen and I talked about the art of implementation and how we all are change makers and how we all are part of a democratic process of governance. Participating in implementation and setting clear principles of regional collaboration has helped me learn how do direct large groups of people towards a common goal. Driving change on a regional scale reduces complexity and makes human environmental systems less complicated and more manageable. - I have really enjoyed the process of changing systems on a regional and provincial level. It is so satisfying to see and feel real tangible results. -- The real problem of humanity is the following: we have paleolithic(monkey) emotions; medieval(very very old) government institutions; and god-like technology. And it is terrifically dangerous, and it is now approaching a point of crisis overall. E.O. Wilson Restoring our environment means we must take charge of our local and regional governance and face our environmental problems together. This takes building trust and creating movement and providing quick wins to overcome doubt. At Eco-Mantra we will continue to work on environmental problems around energy, water, waste and biodiversity. And we will continue to build meaningful partnerships that truly want to drive change. 1. Define clear group boundaries. 2. Match rules governing use of common goods to local needs and conditions. 3. Ensure that those affected by the rules can participate in modifying the rules. 4. Make sure the rule-making rights of community members are respected by outside authorities. 5. Develop a system, carried out by community members, for monitoring members’ behavior. 6. Use graduated sanctions for rule violators. 7. Provide accessible, low-cost means for dispute resolution. 8. Build responsibility for governing the common resource in nested tiers from the lowest level up to the entire interconnected system.

Indonesia faces a complex challenge, balancing developmental pursuits with peatland restoration. But by amplifying community voices and aligning local interests, a sustainable future for its precious peatlands is realistically within reach. I wrote this as a reflection on World Wetlands Day, which has the theme "Wetlands and Human Wellbeing". A very important theme that reflects our challenges to restore peatlands in Indonesia.

A Leader : Guardian of the Future The role of the new leader of the Republic of Indonesia and regional leaders in protecting natural forests and biodiversity is of paramount importance. Indonesia boasts some of the world's most diverse ecosystems, housing a significant portion of the planet's biodiversity. Preserving these natural assets not only safeguards the environment but also ensures the sustainability of vital ecological services upon which human well-being relies. Key to this endeavor is a comprehensive understanding of green development, climate change, and the protection of indigenous rights. The new leader and regional authorities must recognize that economic growth can coexist harmoniously with environmental conservation through sustainable practices. This necessitates policies that prioritize renewable energy sources, promote eco-friendly industries, and enforce stringent regulations against deforestation and habitat destruction. Moreover, climate change poses an imminent threat to Indonesia's ecosystems, exacerbating issues such as forest fires, biodiversity loss, and rising sea levels. Leaders must implement strategies to mitigate carbon emissions, adapt to changing environmental conditions, and foster resilience among vulnerable communities. In parallel, acknowledging and upholding the rights of indigenous peoples is crucial. Indigenous communities often serve as stewards of the land, possessing invaluable traditional knowledge and practices for sustainable resource management. Respecting their rights not only preserves cultural heritage but also enhances conservation efforts by fostering partnerships built on mutual trust and cooperation. In conclusion, the new leader of the Republic of Indonesia and regional leaders play a pivotal role in protecting natural forests and biodiversity. By embracing principles of green development, addressing climate change challenges, and upholding indigenous rights, they can lead Indonesia towards a more sustainable and resilient future. #NewLeader #GreenDevelopment #ClimateChange #Conservation #Communityrights #Indigenousrights
