I'M WONDERING WHY residential and commercial architects speck stick framed buildings when there are better building options available. Please enlighten me. I want to understand. Because buildings are having a difficult time standing up against mother nature these days on the East Coast and are burning down on the west side of our country. Oh, I almost forgot to mention the tornados in the middle of the country and mud slides on the west coast. Yet we build whole subdivisions that we know cannot stand up to our weather patterns or wind blown fires that consume entire communities. JUST ASKING A SIMPLE QUESTION. WE NEED REAL ANSWERS THAT DON'T REQUIRE A COMPLETE REBUILD after an extreme event.

Designing, manufacturing, and installing watertight expansion joints requires a commitment from all that collaborate on the project. Nashville's GEODIS Park MLS Stadium is no exception. The expansion joint cuts through your entire structure, so when everyone on the project understands the importance of properly sealing the joint, it produces a great end result. More Height, Heft, and Scalloped Redesign for Proposal Near Davisville Station A resubmission of plans for the #redevelopment of 25 Imperial Street in #Toronto’s Davisville Village area, bumps the #condo complex to 21 storeys while increasing the size of the floor-plates (enabled by the developer’s purchase of an adjacent property) and applying a new architectural skin. This revised proposal, says Resident (formerly Plaza Partners), is better aligned with the high-rise submissions near Davisville and Eglinton stations. Each version has been designed by BDP Quadrangle, including the latest one which reworks the exterior expression with a more rigorously geometric application of scalloped bays for each vertical run of windows on the tower levels, and each paired run of windows on the podium levels. Great piece. I wonder about the tradeoffs between fire safety and earthquake safety. If the use of wood is restricted for construction, what are implications for earthquake resistance of alternative materials?

Solutions don't have to be costly measures, they just need to be consciously crafted. Craft of a home used to be about beautiful detailing. Generally speaking, it is something that has dissipated over the past few decades. In 2024 there were 27 climate events in the United States that caused over $1 billion in damages each (NCEI). Of this damage, a substantial amount was the loss of homes. It is time architects begin to bring craft back into the fold, not just as an aesthetically beautiful detail, but as carefully constructed ways to protect these homes that are shelters to provide safety and to collect memories. Architecture probably won't be able to remedy all natural disasters, it would be vain to think so. But there are simple steps we can take when we design. From landscaping, to material, geometry, and construction details, we have the ability to give residents to have a better chance. Let's get back to it and honor our responsibilities of protecting public health, safety, and welfare.
