🚀 UNLOCKING EUROPE'S POTENTIAL: ADDRESSING THE 'INNOVATION PARADOX' Despite investing billions in research, Europe struggles to transform groundbreaking ideas into thriving businesses. This phenomenon, known as the ‘innovation paradox,’ hampers job creation and competitiveness. Our latest blog post explores this issue and suggests ways to overcome it. 🔍 KEY POINTS: 💶 Generous Funding: Europe supports research collaborations through substantial funding, technical infrastructure, and knowledge valorisation guidelines. 🚧 Regulatory Hurdles: European copyright laws impose significant restrictions on public-private partnerships, creating a disadvantage compared to global competitors. 🛑 Innovation Roadblocks: Current laws hinder researchers from sharing insights, adding unnecessary red tape and limiting the commercialization of research. 📚 RECOMMENDATIONS: Emerging studies and reports underscore the negative impact of restrictive copyright laws on research-business collaborations. The research community advocates for a more open approach, eliminating the distinction between commercial and non-commercial research. Adopting such policies would enable knowledge valorisation and boost Europe's competitiveness. 🌐 CALL TO ACTION: With the Competitiveness Council meeting next week and the upcoming 2024-29 Parliament and Commission, there’s a pivotal opportunity to align policies and remove the barriers stifling innovation. Embracing the Letta Report’s call for a fifth freedom—the freedom of circulation of knowledge—could propel Europe towards unlocking its full innovation potential. Let's work together to release the handbrake and drive Europe's knowledge economy forward. 🚀 Read the full blog post here: https://lnkd.in/eEW8mYjB #InnovationParadox #ResearchAndDevelopment #EUInnovation #KnowledgeEconomy #PublicPrivatePartnerships #CopyrightReform #Competitiveness #LettaReport #FifthFreedom #Innovation #EUResearch

The internationalization of Colombian Multilatinas: a composite indicator analysis This study employs a composite indicator to measure the degree of internationalization of Colombian Multilatinas. By using primary data available from the analyzed companies' website, the Colombian Multilatinas composite indicator (CMCI) is proposed, which includes six variables related to the Multilatinas’ patterns of internationalization that capture the essence of their productive participation abroad. The findings have managerial and academic implications as the analytical tool used to quantify the competitiveness and the degree of internationalization of Colombian Multilatinas offers important guidelines to improve aspects related to multilatinas' economic capacity, sustainability, technology, and human capital. https://lnkd.in/e-fydvFQ

Last week in Toulouse, Make.org participated in the Rencontres Européennes de la Participation and hosted a workshop with Democracy Technologies, The Innovation in Politics Institute, and Open Source Politics on ‘Scaling up participation to an international level’. Led by Laura Giesen, Editor in Chief for Democracy Technologies at The Innovation in Politics Institute, Valentin Chaput, Co-founder and Managing Director of Open Source Politics, and Javier Morales López, Participatory Projects Manager at Make.org, this workshop brought together experts and participants to discuss the challenges, limits, and opportunities of international participation. Three international formats of participation were presented, including #EurHope, introduced by Javier Morales López. #EurHope is a joint initiative by Make.org and JEF Europe aimed at mobilising young Europeans and raising awareness ahead of the #EUelections2024. Additionally, the Conference on the Future of Europe (#CoFoE) and the European Capital Of Democracy #ECoD jury process were also discussed. The discussions with participants during the workshop allowed us to explore the challenges, limits, and solutions for developing efficient participation processes at this scale. Key topics included: #mobilisation at an international level, #diversity and representativeness, #multilingualism, information on the subject, and follow-up of the project. We examined strategies such as using multiple communication channels, partnering with local organisations, leveraging #AI for translation, and managing participant expectations. Find out the detailed workshop summary here 👇👇

📣 NEW Publication Alert, open access in the Journal of Comparative Migration Studies (CMS). How do forced migrants gather information about legal procedures? Together with Liam Haller, we explored this question in the case of naturalisation processes and showed that a combination of individual perception, interpersonal exchange, and extended networks is employed in order to manage uncertainties stemming from the complex naturalisation bureaucracy. Although this is not necessarily conducive to accessing the right in question, it is a core part of “informed” decision-making in environments characterized by low level of trust and asymmetrical power relations. The low level of trust in the implementation is both mitigated—when the information from different sources overlap—and to a certain extent triggered—when information from different sources contradict—by the overlapping methods of knowledge production.
