Latest Victim of Diversity Backlash: Your Workplace Affinity Group https://bloom.bg/3xUVdJJ Bloomberg recently reported on the continuing struggles of workplace affinity groups, more commonly known as Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) highlighting the challenges they face in the current political and social environment. 💲 Budgets dedicated to ERGs over the last few years have dwindled. Not only does data show the decline in overall funding for DEI programs, falling from 33% in 2022 to 20% so far in 2024, but this also extends to the lack of funding dedicated to ERGs. Additionally, I've personally spoken to several ERG leaders who have confirmed their budgets are either frozen and/or have been significantly slashed in the current or upcoming fiscal year. 📣 ERGs have been a mainstay in the workplace since the 1970s. They act as an outlet and platform for employees to voice their desires, concerns, protests, and ideas amongst peers who share several similar identities in a space where they feel comfortable enough to speak up and speak out and commiserate with others with shared lived experiences without fear of retribution, ridicule, or retaliation. 💡 So how do ERGs not only survive, but thrive in this chaos? Here are a few options to consider: 📊 Demonstrate Value: ERGs should emphasize their impact on the organization by linking their activities to business outcomes. Data showing how ERGs contribute to employee retention, talent development, and overall innovation is one way to establish credibility and value as a business asset. ☮ Engage Allies and Leadership: To thrive and progress, ERGs should actively involve allies at all levels, including securing executive support. This ensures that the initiatives and perspectives of ERGs are not just considered in decision making processes but actively sought out and desired. Direct support from senior leadership establishes credibility and opens communication channels for support and sponsorship. 🔭 Expand Scope and Collaboration: ERGs can increase their relevance by broadening their focus to address business challenges and collaborating with other ERGs or departments. This may involve projects that not only address DEI related challenges but also intersect with corporate social responsibility efforts, community engagement initiatives, and even business growth strategies.
