The City of Tulsa, Tulsa Public Schools, Elevate East and local nonprofits are collaborating to connect foreign-born residents to teaching roles through recruitment events. This initiative helps individuals with international training find jobs that match their skills and education, creating new opportunities for both educators and students in Tulsa’s schools. By diversifying the workforce, Tulsa ensures students see teachers who reflect their cultures and experiences, fostering unity and growth in our schools and beyond. Leilo Ariza, who moved to Tulsa from Colombia, is one of the many inspired by this effort. Check out this inspiring public-private partnership led by Amber Holz, a Kindergarten teacher and member of the Buffett Institute's Nebraska Early Childhood Workforce Leadership Cadre. Holz, working with her school district, community donors, and the local Catholic church, moved an unused playground to a preschool program that lacked a dedicated play space. Today, we recognize Juneteenth, which commemorates the day in 1865 when the final enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned that they were free — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect. Juneteenth derives its name from June 19, 1865, when U.S. General Gordon Granger informed the enslaved individuals of Galveston, Texas, that they were officially free. Two-and-a-half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, Granger’s decree marked the end of slavery in Confederate states. Established in 2020, on the Juneteenth holiday, Black Resilience in Colorado Fund is more than a fund. It is a movement for change to address systematic racism and inequities that negatively impact Black communities throughout Colorado and beyond. Help us pave the path forward.
