One thing I agree with Starmer on is nationalising the railways. (and buses & post while we're at it).

Yes, I know, but our current rail network isn't really free enterprise, is it? It's an uncomfortable mish-mash of Government intervention, dubious contracts and a quest for multiple layers of profit.
The '70 was definitely a low point. A solid reference for how things shouldn't be done.
It was also a low point for UK PLC as a whole. It was also the very tail end of a clear attempt by Government to penalise rail travel in favour of road travel (Guess which is a cash cow?). As most business gurus will tell you, you learn from the mistakes of the past and reference the success of others. Many countries run nationalised rail networks which are clean, reliable and reasonably priced. Those are the positive reference points. The BR of half a century ago is just a bit of history.
