After a brief hiatus due to food poisoning, Athena and I are back, and caffeinated! Recently, a hiring manager shared with me the misconception that contracting staff are less technically skilled. However, I believe this is a myth. In fact, contracting is a great way to continuously increase your skill set in both technical and interpersonal areas, ultimately advancing your career. While due diligence is important in understanding the purpose of a contract, especially if it's short term, contractors are skilled in adapting quickly and adding value to the team. They thrive in environments where they can grow and upskill. So, if you're struggling to find the perfect candidate or have an immediate opening hurting your business, don't shy away from trying a contract solution. It may just be the alternative solution you need. 📧 L.Caswell@wearelhi.com ☎️ (310) 773-4981

My property management company has a rapid turnaround time for hiring quality employees. Here's how we do it: 1. Posting open positions once approved within 2 business hours. 2. Contacting all applicants within 3 business hours. 3. Conducting the recruiter screen as soon as possible given the candidate's schedule. (ideally within 24 hours) 4. Scheduling an in-person interview as soon as possible given the candidate's schedule. (ideally within 24 hours) 5. Hiring if the candidate represents the company values and job offer on the same day of communication from the leader and director. The industry average for this process is 42.5 days, our's is 24.2. Once you know you could have a quality hire, extend an offer immediately before they accept one of the other 10 positions they're interviewing for.

I was recently asked by a contractor about the ideal timing to begin searching for their next role before their contract ends. This question sparked a thought about the best approach for both contractors and businesses when it comes to contract timelines. For contractors, the timing of when to start looking for the next role can significantly impact these timelines. It's essential to consider initiating the job search well in advance to allow ample time for exploration, networking, and securing suitable opportunities. On the other hand, businesses should carefully evaluate whether to confirm the end of a contract or extend it in a timely manner. Don't leave it till the last minute to extend and be surprised when a contractor does not stay as they have found something else. Proactive communication and planning can help streamline the decision-making process and ensure a seamless transition for all parties involved. #Contractors #Businesses #JobSearch #ContractRoles #Communication

Partnering with the best Housebuilding businesses, I stop the wrong people from joining. Over 6750 meetings in 22 years of headhunting. I won't pretend to be your best friend. I'm paid to search. I don't want CVs.
One of the things that I’ve noticed over 21 years of headhunting is that Quantity Surveyors and commercially biased people are wired differently to others. They see the world slightly differently. I noticed this when searching for Engineering people too. Despite their outer confidence and this varies according to seniority, they are usually introverted. This is a shock because when someone has such huge responsibilities for making or breaking a company, it seems odd that they start from an introverted disposition. Maybe the introverts are better listeners and soak up information more readily. Less talking, more listening. Another trait, is that they feel superior in certain settings and dislike being sold to. I’ve helped many QSs during my career to achieve their goals, but of course they would argue that they were destined for great things! That’s why I love what I do and that’s why I find QSs the most interesting folk in housebuilding. I need a couple of decent ones in the southern patch. A high end, niche type and a Project QS for some exciting projects. Let’s see if I can make the numbers add up. WeWantYou.co.uk

It’s not your fault but it is your problem. You need to own it. Nobody else is going to do it for you! Yes, I get that challenges arise from circumstances beyond your control. However, the reality is: It’s not your fault, but it’s always your problem. 🔴 A client pulled a contract offer from us last week 🔴 A candidate managed to completely fluff a final stage when they were as good as starting next Monday 🔴 A project has been put on hold and our contractor let go All of the above happened in the last few working days. None of the above occurred through actions I have taken or not taken, but they sure as hell are my problem to own. Now it is my reaction to the problem that will dictate the outcome. #responsibility #reaction #ownership #fault #recruitment *real time footage of me trying to work out what to do now!

General contractors: you can mitigate a ridiculous amount of risk by reducing turnover. Think about what happens when a PM has put in their 2 weeks. All the relationship building, institutional knowledge, and momentum *poof* just evaporates. It's a total disaster. I've seen it time & time again. And, if you look at the graph below, the problem is getting WORSE! Reality is, there's such an insatiable demand for good people in the industry that your best people could probably make a lateral move and get a 20% pay raise in a month. You retain people with empathy, process, culture, career development, and balance. If you manage operations at a commercial GC, you need to understand that these people are your customers, NOT your resources.

Last week, 1100+ of you told us your main motivation for switching to contract work. Here's what we found👇 A sizeable 55% of respondents voted for the “chance for higher earnings” as their main motivator, compared to “more flexibility”, “interest in high-demand skills” and “to open doors to new work”. Food for thought! 💭 One respondent commented, “Experiencing contracting can be invaluable for personal growth and understanding your true worth. It's a lesson in self-advocacy and a chance to recognise the value you bring to the table. Definitely worth considering at least once in your career journey!” These are just a fraction of the perspectives from the thousands of contractors out there. You never know; a contractor could be the best hire you ever make!
