Changes to Medicare are now in place to support behavioral health. The new policy changes provide more flexibility in the types of providers that are eligible to be reimbursed by Medicare. This includes licensed marriage and family therapists and mental health counselors who can now bill Medicare directly for services. Additionally, the reforms elevate the importance of addressing the social needs of beneficiaries and encourage and support the provision of community-based care. The changes also enable providers to bill for behavioral health crisis services as part of mobile crisis teams at appropriate rates. This is a significant step in expanding access to behavioral health services. Moreover, more types of clinicians such as social workers and mental health counselors are now allowed to bill for the treatment of behavioral health needs related to physical health problems, such as the mental health challenges that come with managing sickle cell disease. Another positive change is the increase in the amount that Medicare pays for psychotherapy codes and some related behavioral health services. These policies create the capacity and flexibility to implement culturally and linguistically effective services, which can help to promote racial equity. Overall, these changes provide additional resources for both early intervention and crisis intervention services. They also allow for the provision of community-based care, which is an essential component of behavioral health services. With these reforms in place, we can continue to improve access to quality care for individuals with behavioral health needs. #Medicare #BehavioralHealth #HealthcareReforms #CommunityCare #MentalHealth

A big win for Behavioral Health! The Supreme Court's recent decision not to hear United Health's appeal surrounding its handling of Behavioral Health claims sent a clear signal that the decision creates a precedent. More importantly, it reinforces existing laws that require health plans to take the input of clinicians seriously. It also highlights the importance of health plans meaningfully engaging with clinicians and members when assessing behavioral health claims. #behavioralhealth #mentalhealth https://lnkd.in/egii_uVm

Our Noah Haines spent the morning at a convening of government officials, medical providers, and advocates hosted by The Hill, discussing barriers preventing underrepresented populations from accessing medical care, the unique #mentalhealth needs of racially and ethnically diverse communities, and how we can change the conversation around minority mental health to reduce stigma and encourage more equitable care. We’re #PyxisProud to participate in conversations like these with other organizations that are helping move the needle on access to mental healthcare like the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and the National Minority Quality Forum. Read Noah’s takeaways from this important conversation below. #MinorityMentalHealthAwarenessMonth #TheHillMentalHealth - We know from years of research that treatment rates for mental illness vary greatly across racial and ethnic groups, and that lower-income individuals and minority populations are less likely to have access to the care that they need. But acknowledging that is just the first step. Now we have to participate in these conversations about why that’s happening and what we can do about it if we want to make any progress in addressing those disparities. - Representative Ritchie Torres (D-NY) said that the fact that there were two members of Congress in attendance at this convening publicly discussing their own struggles with mental health is a clear sign that we've made progress, but we know that we still have a long way to go. - Conversations surrounding mental health often revolve around a general need to ‘do better’ and how our healthcare system has a shortage of available resources to address this epidemic. Rep. Torres went a step further and discussed tangible solutions to advocate for improved mental healthcare through clubhouses, which are a collection of supportive community centers for individuals with severe mental illnesses that help those individuals get access to more personalized care. It was encouraging to see so many leaders and advocates coming together to discuss these important issues, and we look forward to continuing to participate in these conversations and building on our ongoing committment to helping our clients address mental health and substance use disorders. Did you know that in 2023, Pyxis Partners supported The Kennedy Forum in the creation of the first mental health and substance use disorder federal policy guide, which included more than 200 federal policy recommendations aimed at improving the government’s response to the mental health and substance use disorder crisis?
