Today marked my last meeting as Chair of the Accountant in Bankruptcy Audit Committee after 4 years. This forward thinking organisation hired me for their Board when I was expecting my second child, changed the regular meeting day when I explained I didn't have childcare on Wednesdays and took a chance on a younger, less experienced woman. In return I hope they'd agree I delivered on diversity of thought, challenge and scrutiny (and meetings that mostly ran to time)!

✅ Remind the parents in your workplace that, if they qualify, they can now register for the expanded childcare funded hours scheme. You could even include details of this scheme in your "Family" policy. (Don't have one? Let's talk)
✅ Make sure that the national insurance reduction has been implemented correctly and encourage employees to check their payslips and highlight any errors.
✅ Remind your employees to check if they need to file a self assessment tax return e.g. because they claim child benefit but earn over the £50k threshold or they earn over £100k (see link in comments).

Yesterday, the government announced no new money for local authorities in the provisional local government finance settlement. Well, if they can’t do that perhaps they can deal with this massive systemic issue that’s bleeding local authorities dry…
As for every local authority, since 2020 the numbers of children being cared for in Derbyshire has risen by 25% to 1,075.
And the costs of looking after Derbyshire children who cannot live with their birth parents has risen by £40m – an increase of 105% - in the past five years. It isn’t sustainable anymore. We have a placement that costs us £15,000 per week (£780,000 per year)!
Private care providers, who’ve entered this lucrative market, some of which are based off-shore, made profits of over £300m last year, and can pick and choose which children to accept and charge hyper-inflated costs. It’s a distorted, uncompetitive market that is milking local authorities and taxpayers dry.
Now we’re in the impossible situation of looking at reducing our early help offer, which means feeding a spiral of increased demand on our services and increasing costs down the line. We can get just about every area of our budget under control but this one is running away from us, and can’t be brought under control, we have statutory responsibilities we can’t ignore.
We’ve asked our MPs to support us and to their credit they’ve agreed where they can. This isn’t a partisan issue, it’s a market and regulatory issue, requiring some sort of intervention. If govt gets this right there’s the potential to save hundreds of millions across the whole local govt system.
