As the demand for more efficient compute power increases, chipmakers are rethinking the way they build and create chips to meet these growing needs. Heterogeneous Integration allows semiconductor makers to move from stacking layers that create more advanced chips to creating smaller chiplets of different functions that can be combined together to meet these needs. In other words, traditional chip packaging delivers a chip for memory and a chip for logic—different functions on separate chips. HI allows these functions to exist together on one chip. It’s almost like having a donut and having a croissant, but when they come together, they are one fabulous cronut. This advanced packaging using wafer fab equipment technologies allows the industry to stack and connect multiple chiplets to optimize the system for higher performance, lower power consumption and smaller area and lower costs. #GreatThingsHappenHere https://bit.ly/48Trsa1

Today, the NMI - National Microelectronics Institute issued a press release ahead of the UK autumn statement on behalf of its #Semiconductor Leaders Group (SLG). In brief summary; The UK Semiconductor Manufacturing sector faces challenges in staying globally competitive due to the high costs of upgrades and a funding gap. The government's Semiconductor Strategy is expected to address this, but there's a concern about the lack of support for capital expenditure and access to finance. The existing schemes for innovation and R&D fall short, and the SLG has called for changes in capex rules, increased funding, and a matched funding scheme. The SLG proposal also emphasizes addressing the skills shortage through apprenticeship system reform.
