"I don’t have any skill, why would they take me?”
That’s what my friend said when he didn’t even apply to the best company coming on campus!
Just because he thought he didn’t have any skills that the company might seek.
But was this true?
Not at all!
He was one of the brightest minds around; he was just underconfident, nothing else!
Fun fact is, nobody is gonna be totally prepared and tick off all the boxes, there’s no such thing as a perfect applicant!
Eventually, somebody whom we had never thought would even get shortlisted for that dream firm ended up getting selected!
Why? Was that selected guy an overachiever?
I don’t think so, but something clicked for him in the company’s interview!
Maybe that guy had extremely good communication skills but lacked technical skills.
And with it being a client-facing role, the company just wanted someone who could represent the firm well, not necessarily someone to crunch the numbers (maybe they already had a number-cruncher on their team).
This is just one story.
Similarly, a really close friend of mine, who belonged to an average off-campus college, applied only to tier-2 firms because she felt that nobody would take her since she was from an off-campus college, and many overachievers might be applying for the same role. She thought she didn’t stand a chance against them.
Three months later, this same girl cracked De Shaw via the off-campus route from a pool of 5000+ candidates from the whole DU.
The moral is, don’t ever self-reject yourself!
Let the interviewer and company reject you!
Apply everywhere, and take your shot shamelessly at every single place you want to be at!
