Both of their first jobs end in truly wild fashion that you'll not want to miss. They share a bit of their journey to getting to where they are today with their own creative agency. They share about not "buying the truck," which is a great metaphor about not overreaching and spending too much at the start up of a company. They share about the origin of the name of their company, Little Hands of Stone and how it applies to their approach to business. They share about how they learned that they needed to grow the business differently and the shock that that was. As business partners they talk about having a healthy and honest partnership in the work that they do, especially around how much they choose to work each week. They talk about how important the partnership has been for them as they are able to balance each other out and respect each other even when they disagree on what to do.

We’re on to Question No. 2 in our series, where I highlight the most intriguing and frequently asked questions from my favorite clients. Today’s question is: How can I reignite my small business team’s passion? I absolutely love this question because it shows a leader who is proactive and genuinely cares about their team's morale. But before you jump into ways to boost your team's enthusiasm, start with a crucial step: Check your own excitement! 💭 Are you still fired up about your mission? 💭 Is your business feeling like a thrilling journey rather than just a daily grind? If your brand’s core purpose, mission, and vision are deeply authentic and vibrant, your enthusiasm will naturally inspire your team. If you’re seeing a drop in energy, it might indicate that the core elements of your brand need a refresh. Make sure you're living your purpose and actively moving toward your mission. Your vision should be a vivid reminder pushing you and your team toward that desired state. Fulfilling the mission should feel like an exciting adventure for every team member. Instead of jumping around as a cheerleader (which can become overwhelming for both parties—at least, that’s what I’ve been told 🫣😀), give your team space to discover what excites them. Provide the support they need and have the tough conversations when necessary. Motivating with perks like money and vacations is a short-term fix. Instead, focus on letting them create their own dream jobs that make them genuinely excited to come to work every day. Here’s a thought: If things still don’t seem quite right, consider asking your team directly. They might know exactly what they need. 💬 How often do you check in with your team about their true feelings? 💬 When was the last time you revisited your purpose, mission, and vision? I recently watched a TED Talk between Adam Grant and Brian Chesky, where they discussed the notion that a company shouldn't be compared to a family. One key point stood out: you can't fire your parents or partner when times get tough, but that's not the case in a company. This took me back to my days at a young startup where the founder often said, "We are all a family here." He genuinely meant it, but this well-meaning sentiment often turned sour during critical moments like annual appraisals. Hearing his genuine words, employees started to feel they were always talking to an elder brother who would always have their best interests at heart. However, at pivotal moments like annual appraisals, they started to see their elder brother become a shrewd CEO whose main objective was expense rationalization, not employee upliftment. Naturally, not everyone got a 30% year-on-year hike. For the next three months post-appraisal, the entire morale would shift. I saw this pattern repeat for three cycles and concluded that while it's good to have 'companionate love', going beyond that can raise unrealistic expectations. And, we all know that even the greatest performance can be significantly undermined when you've over-committed and under-delivered! I often say that I work with “family businesses, and businesses that feel like family.” Whenever I say this, I’m always cognizant of how using the word “family” to describe a non-family business isn’t always the right way forward, either. It suggests an unwavering loyalty for both the employee and the organization—and that’s certainly not always the case. But I have seen plenty of businesses that are family-ish. In a good way. Someone had a great idea for a small business, so they started one. 10 years later, they have an employee base of 20 people and those employees know each other. They feel safe to speak their mind and have courageous conflict with one another. They go to each other’s weddings and anniversary celebrations and kids’ birthday parties. In this case, “good” means the employees in that organization created that environment on their own. They created their own family system. It wasn’t the business making a decree or having an expectation of how employees should act. This can also be seen in large corporations. Starbucks as a multi-billion dollar company may not operate within a family system or structure, but your franchise down the street might function in a family-oriented way. They have a specific system of operating. I do believe that organizations can indeed act like family. But it’s something that needs to happen organically. Saying “We’re a Family” as part of your recruiting efforts, or a marketing pitch? Not so much. #FamilyBusinesses #OrganizationalStructures #FamilySystemsTheory

Join a team ⚽️not a family 👨👩👧👦 This made me laugh this morning, shared by Marina I’m a big proponent of the fact that businesses aren’t families, they are high performing teams. Reed Hastings, in his book, No Rules Rules, talks about this a lot, you don’t expect to be kicked out of a family, whereas you’re aware you won’t be on the high performing Olympics team forever. I say it a slightly different way, you can’t fire your grandmother! When you think of work and businesses like a team, you unlock a healthier way of thinking one where; - you don’t feel guilt when your “transfer” happens - a culture of performance is more important than one of familial relationships - you keep an eye out naturally on how other “teams” are doing without worrying about upsetting people - if you’re a top tier talent, and the business isn’t doing well, there is no family ties making you stay So, in my opinion, you should join a team not a family! #culture #business #teamwork #teamenvironment #collaboration #healthylifestyle #worklifebalance

Squeezing in a Third Act Check In before what I hope is a glorious 3-day weekend for you! Here’s the TL;DR I’m ‘down the shore’ — my happy place. I’ve been coming here for years, usually stressed because I had so much to do at work and so much on my agenda for fun, that fitting it all in was like a puzzle where you realize you’re missing pieces. That was #corporate Heidi. Today I had a moment of #gratitude and fond memories that, when the same thing happened in the past, made me anxious. I got stuck behind a drawbridge about to open. Old me: “Well there’s five minutes I’ll never get back.” New me: “This is part of the adventure. Watching the whole operation is fascinating.” You see, I couldn’t enjoy the little things I always loved when I was borrowing time from an #employer or project. Just like a drawbridge has a well defined line between when to pass and when to wait, we humans could learn a thing or two about drawing lines around work to keep *it* in a box, rather than yourself and the things you love.
