I'm inspired by this article authored by Oakland high school students that I've read for the last two semesters with my education classes. In fact, it's made me want to have some fun with a more visual medium of inquiry with my own students. How do you use #photography or #photovoice in your classes? 🌟The Importance of DEI Training 🌟 Reflecting on a recent incident at Aboyne Primary School, it's evident that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) training is indispensable across all institutions. The situation, where parents were offered class photos with or without children with special needs, underscores a significant lack of awareness and sensitivity towards DEI in educational settings. It's disheartening that such a choice was even presented, highlighting the urgent need for DEI education and awareness. Inclusive environments are essential for every child's well-being and sense of belonging. Excluding children with special needs from class photos not only perpetuates harmful stereotypes but also sends a distressing message of exclusion and marginalization. It's crucial to recognise that promoting inclusivity is not solely the responsibility of educational bodies. External partners, such as Tempest Photography, must also prioritize DEI training to ensure they contribute positively to inclusive environments. ✨ DEI training is about creating empathy and understanding. With comprehensive training, companies like Tempest Photography could recognise the importance of ensuring all children, regardless of abilities, are represented and celebrated in class photos. Let's continue to champion inclusivity, challenge discrimination, and work towards a society where diversity is celebrated in all its forms. Please, read the article and give your opinions in the comments. https://lnkd.in/ePETZ_yY #DEI #diversityequityandinclusion

I'm not merely a "fan" of visual research methods, I'm a dedicated practitioner. Experience has taught me that one specific type of visual research is key to creating learning environments where students are not treated as subjects but instead, our greatest teachers. Participatory photography--more commonly known as photovoice--decenters administrators and teachers within the process. Here, those we hope to learn about are the people we learn from. Learners document their experiences, paying careful attention to opportunity gaps and the shadowy corners of the learning environment that they have deep expertise navigating. They're typically spaces that educators are aware of but do not spend much time within themselves. This makes us unreliable narrators. I've said little about cell phone bans, mostly because I just raised two young women who took themselves off of social media entirely when they realized the detrimental effect it was having on their ability to attend to their learning and their mental health. I get that. However: I also spent the duration of their schooling years wondering if and when they would ever learn how to use those devices to engage in meaningful inquiry work, document their learning, and share their stories. I struggle to understand the learners I serve when I don't invite them to consistently document, reflect upon, and share their learning stories. I struggle to understand how their voices aren't featured more prominently in all of the research we hold up within the field. More on PhotoVoice here, and I recommend the work of Amanda O. Latz, Ed.D. as well. Her book, Photovoice Research in Education and Beyond: A Practical Guide from Theory to Exhibition was recommended to me by Dr. Ann Marie Luce years ago. I reference it heavily it my own research and work, and suggest to K-12 educators often, as we shift toward anti-oppressive assessment practices. https://lnkd.in/eQkTCHyf

🔥 New post on the blog! 🔥 Think of childhood creativity and your mind may conjure images of kids drawing, painting, or shaping putty into pretty sculptures. Yet a big part of a child’s creativity and imagination are shaped outdoors when they are doing one of the things that comes most naturally to them: playing. Playgrounds allow kids to explore, test, and expand their knowledge and physical skills. Study after study has shown that learning through play can fulfill the physical, intellectual, social, and emotional needs of children. So get them outside and let them play!!! Read more about the benefits of playgrounds at the blog! https://lnkd.in/evK2baqU

Typography is nothing but letters that can speak. Typography is a varied and extensive subject, and many designers have dedicated their lives to this artistic expression. For many new-age brands, though, the understanding and application seem restricted to the logo and official font for the brand. Sharing one of Headless Hippies' early work, illustrating how #logo design can move beyond a monogram and can imbibe the very essence of your brand. For the logo of the 'Arts Education Conference' held in 2012, we used each alphabet in its name to weave a story. Inspired by Warli art and ancient cave paintings, each alphabet comes alive with the nuance and spirit of a distinct element under the theme of 'Diversity and Social Justice'. The result was a highly memorable logo that used visual #storytelling to communicate the core message behind the conference. Watch the video to see how the idea was brought to life. #HeadlessHippies #DesignStrategy #Typography #font #Logodesign #SocialImpact #SocialInnovation #Diversity #SocialJustice #HumanRights #Logos #Graphicdesign #Branding #Impact #Logodesigns #Marketing Goethe Institut Indien India Foundation for the Arts Anupama Gowda https://lnkd.in/gYdZCjQY
