🌊 Imagine waking up to find your home underwater, thanks to rising sea levels! This isn't just a distant possibility. It's a growing reality for millions of people living in coastal communities across the U.S., and for low-income families who already struggle to make ends meet. The threat of #flooding is especially devastating.
🏢 #PublicHousing, which is supposed to provide a safe haven for the most vulnerable members of our society, is particularly at risk. The buildings are often old and decrepit, and they're not designed to withstand the kind of #extremeweather events we're seeing more frequently due to #climatechange. According to a new report from the Union of Concerned Scientists, nearly 7 million affordable homes are needed to house the 11 million extremely low-income families in the United States; however, with sea levels rising and storms becoming more frequent, it's becoming increasingly difficult for these families to find a place to call home.
📢 The report's authors, Zoe Middleton and Rachel Cleetus, are sounding the alarm about the urgent need for #climateresilient design and construction in public and affordable housing. They're calling on policymakers to take action to address the affordable housing crisis and prioritize the needs of low-income families who are most affected by climate change.
⚖️ It's not just about building more houses. It's about creating communities that are fair and equitable. Climate change is a #socialjustice issue, and our responses to it must prioritize the most vulnerable members of our society. #EJFriday #ExtremeWeatherSZN
