Fundamental to Systematic or Systematic to fundamental? More and more trading firms are increasingly blending the insights and perspectives of fundamental, bottom up analysis and technical, systematic signals to enhance and improve strategies being generated. It's happening in both directions, whether it's discretionary funds bringing in those with a quantitative background to help systematise pre-existing strategies or electronic trading shops looking to utilise the analysis of fundamental specialists - such an approach is becoming more and more common. We're currently working on two roles, with two separate firms where they're looking to blend both methodologies. One is with a discretionary trading firm who are looking to bring in a systematic specialist to help develop and systematise strategies within a specialised quantamental team. Another is with a HFT firm that is looking for an equity research analyst to provide fundamental perspectives to improve existing strats as well as drive new revenue streams from their bottom up analysis. I recently hired a great analyst for my upcoming macro fund. How did he convince me to hire him? I receive countless inquiries from young but also seasoned people in finance with pretty much the same question: ''How do I get into a macro analyst or portfolio manager role at a (hedge) fund?'' As I recently hired a quantitative analyst for my upcoming macro fund, let me share with you my interview process and how did he stand out from the crowd. The interview process works in 3 steps: - You apply sending over CV and a short email to pitch yourself - You get a case study for which you present results in a memo - One get-to-know you interview - One technical interview And this is how this young analyst stood out from hundreds of applications: 1) The CV was short and clear: it took me 2 minutes to understand his added value as he made sure to add an elevator pitch paragraph on top of the CV Lesson: in this business, people's attention span is very short and you have a few minutes (max) to make the best out of it! 2) The memo was written really, really well: main findings, explanation of the methodology, conclusion Lesson: you can be the smartest guy out there, but you need to make sure you can communicate well too! 3) Grinding, humble mentality: macro investing means you'll be wrong 50% of the times, and you need the right attitude to succeed in the industry Lesson: employers love people that are genuinly humble and willing to work hard to improve Here is the takeaway. Yes, your technical skills matter and you should make sure you have the best possible education and you're good at what you do. But to stand out in today's job market if you are looking to become a macro portfolio manager or analyst you also need to ace your hiring process. Communicate effectively, be concise, be good, be humble.
