Through my occupational therapy assistant schooling, I often find myself advocating for and demonstrating the importance of therapeutic exercises. Recently, I had the unexpected opportunity to practice what I preach after experiencing a shoulder subluxation. To kickstart my rehabilitation journey, I turned to Pendulum exercises, a cornerstone of shoulder rehabilitation. These gentle, controlled movements have been my go-to technique for regaining mobility and strength. Designed to promote healing and prevent stiffness, they offer a way to rehabilitate without putting undue stress on the injured joint. Here are a few key benefits I experienced: 1. Pain Relief:The rhythmic motion helped reduce pain and discomfort. 2. Improved Range of Motion: Gradually, I noticed increased flexibility and reduced stiffness. 3. Enhanced Blood Flow: These exercises promoted circulation, which is crucial for healing. Going through this rehabilitation process myself has deepened my appreciation for the power of therapeutic exercises and the resilience of the human body. #OccupationalTherapy #Rehabilitation #ShoulderRecovery #PendulumExercises #HealthcareProfessionals

walking on a rolled-up mat can be a beneficial therapy for addressing toe walking. It encourages sensory input and balance, which can promote a more natural heel-to-toe gait. Here's how it works:How It Helps:Balance and Proprioception: Walking on an uneven surface like a rolled mat challenges the child’s balance, requiring them to engage more of their leg and foot muscles, especially the ankle muscles. This can help strengthen the muscles needed for proper heel-to-toe walking. Using a rolled mat as a calming technique can indeed be effective for hyperactive children, particularly in sensory integration or occupational therapy settings.

Core strength is crucial for children's development. Signs of weak core muscles include slouching while writing, relying on chairs for support, and struggling with playground activities. These children may also fatigue easily and avoid rough play. Occupational therapy can help improve core strength, leading to better posture, endurance, and overall physical confidence. #TherapyPoint

One size does not fit all! This case highlights the importance of customizing home modifications to the individual's needs. #occupationaltherapy #ot #homemodifications #aginginplace
From this pic it looks like a well-put bathroom modifications with the pole, grab bars, walk-in shower and toilet riser. Not quite. An OT did not recommend these DMEs. Nothing is wrong with that, as hospital and home health case managers do that to facilitate discharge, but it bothers me that no follow-up was ever conducted after it was installed. The client's multiple conditions and contextual factors were not considered. She is 4'11 with a diagnosis of left hemiplegic cerebral palsy, seizures, and frequent falls. The built-in shower seat is far from the shower control valve. The toilet seat was too high, and she dragged her left leg when ambulating with a walker and had to walk back from the toilet door to leave her walker due to the narrow space. She has been using it for two months after her discharge from the hospital. I felt sad and disappointed that most of the time, occupational therapy was not even recommended in the post-discharge phase. The client has been by social workers and case managers but not an OT. It is a concrete example of how most clients have fallen through the cracks due to poor inter and intra-agency collaboration.
