Kuban (The Facing Project Press) follows the lives of over 20 athletes, coaches, and sports-media professionals in different stages of their careers, capturing their lived experiences and the defining moments that propelled them to advocate for change. The bench is getting deeper and more people are taking notice! This past weekend we witnessed another viewership record as the interest in women’s sports soars. Companies are stepping up to join the movement, reaping short term revenue generation, conversion, new customer acquisition, and long term impact. The long-term benefits, the seeds of which we are planting now, will lead to increased girls' sports participation, important career skills (94% of female C-suite executives played sports), sustainable careers, and retirement for professional athletes. The long-term goals are far from won, but we’re watching them grow. We must water them by inspiring girls to get involved with sports at every level. Normally, my posts steer away from deep-dives, focusing instead on lighter, business-centric content. However, after reading many unbelievable, disgusting comments on an article about Audi Crooks, I felt compelled to share what I’m feeling. Reflecting on the NCAA performances of Audi Crooks and DJ Burns showcases not only their incredible talents but also highlights a discrepancy in public discourse that underscores a multifaceted scrutiny women face—scrutiny that extends beyond their professional (business, athletic or otherwise) abilities into areas wholly irrelevant, like appearance and weight. Audi, a standout player for Iowa State, finds herself subjected to this undue scrutiny, while discussions around DJ, representing NC State, commend his athletic performance, focusing solely on his contributions on the court. This unequal evaluation highlights a troubling discrepancy prevalent not just in sports but across all professional sectors, where women are often judged against an expanded set of criteria that encompasses both their professional achievements and their adherence to subjective, non-relevant standards. Meanwhile, male counterparts, like DJ, receive recognition primarily for their professional accomplishments, untethered by irrelevant personal judgments. Let’s call for a shift in the conversation, focusing more on actual achievements and less on unrelated personal attributes. We can do better. Acknowledging this multifaceted scrutiny is crucial, but so is recognizing the sheer talent and dedication Audi and DJ bring to their teams. Both athletes have demonstrated exceptional skill, determination, and a commitment to excellence in the NCAA tournament. Tough loss in OT for Audi and the Iowa State Cyclones…but she made her mark on the record books! Wishing DJ Burns and the NC State Wolfpack all the best as they continue to be a great underdog story of the tournament. May both of their athletic journeys be filled with success, recognition, and the respect they each rightfully deserve.
