Did you know that 40% of all cancer cases are preventable? With #EUCancerPlan, we are taking action to support effective cancer prevention strategies that can prevent illness, save lives and reduce suffering. This includes our new initiative today, to address cancers that can be prevented by vaccination, namely cancers caused by Human papillomaviruses (HPV) and the Hepatitis B virus (HBV). To eliminate #cervicalcancer and other cancers caused by HPV, such as certain head and neck cancers, the #EUCancerPlan set a target to significantly improve the vaccine rates for girls and boys in the EU by 2030. The Cancer Plan also aims to ensure access and increased uptake of the HBV vaccination, notably to prevent #livercancer. These vaccines can make a huge difference in preventing certain cancers. However, there is still a long way to go. Data shows that many EU countries are well below the HPV vaccination rates targets. There is also a significant lack of data on HBV vaccination rates. Today’s Recommendation includes actions to improve the situation such as: ➡ Boosting vaccination confidence & uptake ➡ Ensuring that vaccination accessible, including by making it free of charge or fully reimbursable ➡ Increasing awareness of vaccination as a cancer prevention tool Prevention is always better than cure. #Cervical Cancer Prevention: Vaccination & Early Detection! Cervical cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women globally, with a particularly high prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa. #Vaccination and early detection are key strategies for preventing cervical cancer. #HPV vaccination is recommended for children at the ages of 9 to 14 to ensure protection before potential exposure to the human papillomavirus (HPV), a known risk factor for cervical cancer. The specific age range for vaccination may vary slightly by country. While both boys and girls can benefit from HPV vaccination, girls are typically prioritized due to their higher risk of cervical cancer. #Regular Pap smear screening is also crucial for early detection of cervical cancer. Last week the European Commission published a proposal for a Council Recommendation on vaccine-preventable cancers, namely those caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and Hepatitis B virus (HBV). The HPV Action Network has been key in advocating for the implementation of these policy recommendations including: • Boost the uptake of vaccines in all affected population groups, including by increasing confidence in vaccination • Address barriers to vaccination, including by offering it free of charge or reimbursing costs • Improve the monitoring of vaccination coverage rates to close data gaps and guide public health action • Increase awareness of vaccination as a cancer prevention tool This proposal for a Council Recommendation will now be reviewed by all EU Member State Governments before a formal agreement is concluded. The HPV Action Network will advocate for parity in vaccination targets of 90% in all genders, and the need for further education and awareness to ensure that the value of immunisation is illustrated to communities as we seek to end HPV cancers. 🎗 Almost 40% of all cancers are preventable. Through vaccination against Human papillomaviruses (HPV) and Hepatitis B (HBV) virus we have the potential to save lives. Every young person should have the opportunity to protect themselves against cancers later in life.   🛡 HPV and HBV can lead to cervical, liver and other forms of cancer. As part of #EUCancerPlan, we proposed a Recommendation on vaccine-preventable cancers at the beginning of the year and today we welcome its adoption by the Member States. 🎉   The Recommendation includes a series of measures that EU countries can take, to improve the uptake of vaccination against HPV and HBV. These include: 🔸Making these vaccines free of charge 🔸Providing easy access to vaccination 🔸Including the vaccination on cancer prevention programmes 🔸Spreading awareness of the vaccination benefits 🎯 Our aim is to reach a 90% HPV vaccination rate for girls and to significantly increase the vaccination of boys by 2030.   🚀 Everyone knows someone with cancer. Researchers have found that the bivalent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine significantly reduces the incidence of invasive cervical cancer! In this population-based study, scientists analyzed data from Scotland, linking screening, immunization, and cancer registry information. The study assessed the impact of age, number of doses, and deprivation on the incidence of invasive cervical cancer following bivalent HPV vaccination. The study found that the bivalent vaccine effectively prevents the development of invasive cervical cancer. Women vaccinated at 12-13 years of age showed a reduced incidence of the disease, even with 1 or 2 doses. At older ages, 3 doses were required for statistically significant vaccine effectiveness. Additionally, women from more deprived areas benefited more from vaccination than those from less deprived areas. Overall, the study emphasizes the importance of HPV vaccination in reducing the incidence of invasive cervical cancer. #Keytakeaways => The bivalent HPV vaccine reduces the incidence of invasive cervical cancer. => Vaccination at a younger age with 1 or 2 doses confers benefits. => 3 doses of the vaccine are most effective for older age groups. => Women from more deprived areas benefit more from vaccination. "Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women worldwide. The World Health Organization has called for the elimination of cervical cancer (defined as an age-standardized incidence rate of 4 per 100 000 women) because of its social and economic consequences, which fall disproportionately on low and middle-income countries. The World Health Organization recommends a strategy of vaccination, screening, and access to treatment to reach this target."
