💡The "House of the Good Shepherd" in Bratislava is an excellent example of Rococo architecture.💡 In the 18th century, when this house was built, Bratislava (then still Prešporok) was a densely built-up city, especially in the area under the castle. Urban land was very expensive and limited in this area, so every bit of available space had to be used efficiently. Some cities, including Bratislava, had rules and taxes that were calculated according to the width of the facade facing the street. Therefore, houses were built as close as possible to each other and often had very narrow floor plans to fit between existing buildings. Building narrow houses was more advantageous from a tax point of view, and this kind of thinking was common in many European cities at the time. This house is interesting because it reflects the mentality and needs of people in the past. People had to be creative in how to make efficient use of limited urban land if they wanted to live in a given location. The house is a living example of how architecture can respond to the economic and practical challenges of its time, while maintaining aesthetic value and historical significance. Its importance lies mainly in its architectural value, because it is one of the best preserved Rococo buildings not only in Bratislava, but in the whole of Central Europe. However, it became significant only later, thanks to its uniqueness and preservation, which makes it a symbol of the old castle of Bratislava. And one more thing... The name "House of the Good Shepherd" was not given by chance, but thanks to the statue on its facade (shepherd carrying a sheep) that became a characteristic feature of this building. Although the house was originally called something else, the statue of the Good Shepherd symbolically "baptized" it, and it is today known by this name among locals and tourists alike. . . . . . #historicarchitecture #urbanplanning #18thcentury #europeanarchitecture #narrowhouses #preservation #heritage #history #realestate #Bratislava

The Elusive Prosperity! Ostend, Belgium, has undergone a remarkable architectural transformation from 1899 to today, shaped by modernization and shifting urban priorities. Known in 1899 as the “Queen of the Belgian Sea-Side Resorts,” Ostend was a prominent destination for the European elite. Its Belle Époque architecture, with grand facades and intricate detailing, symbolized the prosperity and culture of the time. Opulent hotels, casinos, and promenades lined its coast, reflecting a bygone era of luxury and sophistication. Today, the contrast in architecture speaks volumes about urban evolution. As Ostend adapted to meet contemporary needs, much of its architectural heritage gave way to modern, streamlined structures. This transition illustrates a broader pattern seen worldwide: historic cities often face a complex balance between preserving their character and adapting for the future. While modernization brings functionality and efficiency, it sometimes erases the architectural heritage that once defined a place. #Ostend #Belgium #UrbanEvolution #ArchitecturalHeritage #Modernization #BelleÉpoque #HistoricalCities #Ostend #ArchitectureTransformation #CulturalShift #Cityscape #Classical #Conserve #Preserve #culture #Classicalarchitecture

Creating a list of the most beautiful cities in the world is an impossible task. Depending on who you ask, you’d yield wildly different results. But here is one by Architectural Digest, highlighting some supremely spectacular places, from the remote beaches of the Caribbean to the cultural capital of Japan. Of course happy to see City of Tallinn featured and so high up👏 What makes a city beautiful? The best cities offer something that can’t be found anywhere else. The most beautiful places in Europe include #Tallinn, a near perfectly preserved medieval city; #Paris, home to the Eiffel Tower and grand boulevards; #Barcelona, a place with must-see European architecture; #Florence for its art and architecture; and #Amsterdam, with its distinctive canals. Tallinn, Estonia Strolling this seaside city is like being transported back to 13th-century Europe—with the very modern luxury of being able to do so with an artisanally frothed latte in your hand. Tallinn is one of the most well-preserved medieval cities in the world, a fact that has helped its Old Town earn UNESCO World Heritage status. And it’s not just a church or two that are still intact, but an extraordinary portion of Tallinn’s centuries-old layout, including building plots, winding cobblestone streets, defense towers, and large sections of the wall that encircles this architecturally rich city. Tallinna ettevõtluskeskus/ Tallinn Enterprise Centre If nothing else, a nice list of travel suggestions:) Full list and descriptions in the comments👇

In Büyükada, Adalar/İstanbul, Turkey, a former Greek Orthodox Patriarch Sophronius, has been adapted into a community space for the local residents. Located on the largest island off the coast of Istanbul, the project strived to create a functional space that kept the architectural details and historical significance intact. Preserving the original buildings brick both inside and outside, while also maintaining the same floor plan, the property reduced its material usage in the restoration. A terraced garden in the front of the project, accentuates the amphitheater style outdoor space built for public performances. In the rear of the project, transformative spaces were created within the gardens that will act as a bookstore and cafe space for the neighborhood. The project, shows the capabilities of adaptive reuse, no matter the location, materials, and former uses involved. We must continue to view our historically significant but obsolete structures, as opportunities to preserve and protect the historic significance, while modernizing them for a rapidly changing environment. We’re all in this together #adaptivereuse #reducecarbonfootprint #recycle #recycledmaterials #recycling #historicpreservation #renewablefuture #construction #sustainabledesign

I think you know the examples on how architecture can redefine urban identity and put cities on a map. Yesterady I had an opportunity to visit Szczecin representing Architectresses | Architektoniczki on Human Right Conference. Of course a stop in Philharmonic is a must! Why? Because this building has totally redefined the city’s narrative, elevating the city's significance on the global stage! What this building has changed: 👇 👉 Architecture as Identity Szczecin, a city with a complex history and diverse cultural influences, has long been searching for a modern symbol to represent its identity. The Philharmonic Hall, designed by the Spanish architectural firm ESTUDIO BAROZZI VEIGA SLP, offers this in a powerful and evocative form. 👉 A Catalyst for Urban Renewal Its presence has sparked urban renewal. The area around the building has transformed into a vibrant cultural hub, attracting tourists, artists, and locals alike. Architecture has brought new life into a city, fostering not only economic growth but what more important- social interaction. 👉 Raising Global Visibility Before the construction of the Philharmonic Hall, Szczecin was not widely recognized on the international cultural map. However, the building’s striking design has garnered numerous accolades, including the prestigious EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award in 2015. This recognition has put Szczecin in the spotlight, attracting global attention and increasing its tourism appeal, asserting itself as a destination for art, culture, and innovation Architecture is not merely about constructing buildings; it is about shaping the soul of a city and giving it a voice. #architectresses #architektoniczki #barozziveiga #philharmonichallszczecin #architecturematters

When creating modern residential projects, we go beyond just building architecture. An increasingly harmonious connection between humans and the environment has become an equally important indicator of quality of life, which is why we reflect this in the homes we create. Verdant oases, water bodies, and cozy alleys not only adorn the city but also become an extension of our homes. 🏡 One of the unique features of Žvėrynas City is its green space, where you can feel like you're in a forest in the middle of the city. Meanwhile, Žygimantų 12, located even closer to the city center in the old town, creates its own landscape from an inner courtyard garden, a nearby river and parks. No matter which home you choose, you can experience how the charm of Vilnius and the tranquility of nature blend together to offer a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city, even in its very heart. But perhaps nothing can define a place quite as distinctly as its architecture. Whether it's through thoughtful urban planning or adapting to cultural movements, the visual design of a city can transport you through time, while planting you firmly in a very specific place. Need convincing? These are the world's 20 best cities for architecture, from Brasília to Budapest…” https://lnkd.in/gm2eQGBD

This remembrance of Fumihiko Maki, including a mention of Hillside Terrace, recalls his warmth, humility, and curiosity. Phu Hoang and Rachely Rotem had a conversation with Maki in the summer of 2018. With that project, he gave much of the credit to the owner and would not take any himself; instead, he simply described his idea as "making space for a tree and its shade." This quote and conversation were featured in MODU's book, Field Guide to Indoor Urbanism, published five years later. https://lnkd.in/gdxKg5hk
