Rethinking our approach to the legal system? Now that's appealing! Looking forward to reading the Report Rebecca Plummer!
As many of you know I have spent the last 4 years or so working on a Winston Churchill Trust (Australia) Fellowship in to ‘Access to Justice in Communities Experiencing Isolation and Disadvantage’. Due to the generosity of the COURTS ADMINISTRATION AUTHORITY, my report launch will be held on 21 June 2024, at the South Australian District Court, where I will go through my findings. Sadly my health issues prevent me from attending but my heart and spirit are with those attending This in-person event allows us to dig deeper and come together in dialogue and action, – face-to-face, heart-to-heart – to transform the colonial justice system,” stated Kory Wilson, BCFNJC Chair. “For centuries, Indigenous justice systems and legal traditions have been rejected and challenged by colonial law. The Justice Forum is about reclaiming space for their restoration and upholding transparency and accountability. BCFNJC will share our groundbreaking progress advancing the BC First Nations Justice Strategy. Through plenary sessions, breakout rooms, workshops, and other forms of culturally grounded engagement, First Nations and Indigenous delegates will continue to shape this progress, ensuring the work is reflecting their community justice priorities and needs. Moreover, all participants will roll-up their sleeves and get to work in ways that will inform BCFNJC’s work in 2024 and into the future. BCFNJC is grateful to the Law Foundation of BC for being such a strong justice collaborator and funding the Justice Forum.” The BC First Nations Justice Strategy (the Strategy) was signed by BCFNJC and the Province of British Columbia on March 6, 2020, to address the poor justice outcomes for Indigenous people in BC. The Strategy contains 25 distinct, yet interdependent strategies that impact all areas of the justice system, from policing to community-based justice programming. With its comprehensive scope of work involving many justice partners, the Strategy recognizes the need for continuous information sharing, progress tracking, and engagement, calling for an annual Justice Forum (Strategy 16) to facilitate this.
The BC First Nations Justice Council (BCFNJC) is excited to hold the 3rd Annual First Nations Justice Forum at the Westin Bayshore, Vancouver from April 8-10th, 2024 2024 on the Unceded & Ancestral Territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, Vancouver, BC. The Justice Forum, planned with support from BC’s Indigenous Justice Secretariat, gathers First Nations leaders, Rights Holders, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, Indigenous legal service providers, government partners, and other collaborators to advance the implementation of the BC First Nations Justice Strategy. https://lnkd.in/gmea9SA6

Financial Services Attorney at Maslon LLP | Representing Commercial Creditors and Indenture Trustees in Bankruptcy, Reorganization, and Trust Proceedings
Many people are surprised when I tell them that a bankruptcy case brings together multiple types of law: contract, secured transactions, real estate, litigation, and, yes, even family law. What's more, the relative recency of the Bankruptcy Code's adoption (the Code we use today is less than 50 years old!) allows unexplored nuances to pop up every year. In my recent article for the Minnesota Bankruptcy Bulletin, I explain a recent case by the 8th Circuit BAP which dealt with an uncommon, but not implausible, situation: what happens when an individual files chapter 7, then gets divorced, then converts to chapter 13, and then converts back to chapter 7? What status does a child-support claim (usually given first priority) have if it is post-petition but pre-conversion? And can legislative history help us answer that question? Find out at the link below! Thanks to David M. Tanabe for the editing assistance and thanks to the Minnesota State Bar Association for this great publication!

Research Fellow @ USIU-Africa I Mediation, Negotiation, Diplomacy I Dispute Systems Designer I Ordained Minister.
In the afternoon of 9th of September 2023 at the Weinstein Mediation Center in California ( Napa Valley), my heart was bathed by an inspiration to present an impromptu poem on burdens to a room full of accomplished judges, distinguished mediators, amazing peace-makers, leading champions of justice, and educators from various countries of the world. In the center we had a stunning group of individuals burdened with the daunting task of making the world a better place; the concern of consolidating democracy in the face of democracy de-consolidation; the herculean assignment of improving judiciaries; the gargantuan mission to augment access to justice not forgetting one particular 12 year peace-maker who dreams to become the 1st female president of the United States of America. BURDENS: Burdens are intangible dreams , cares , aspirations, struggles, & goals. Often the weight of burdens are tangible. Burdens (some) choose us, for whatever reasons. Burdens (some)are intimate and designed after our unique purpose. Burdens (some) are invisible but powerful; they can not be seen but are palpable in effect. Burdens (such as leadership) are a privilege and honor; they crown the burden carrier(s) with glory. Burdens( some) are disruptive. They will challenge our paradigms, sociological contexts, & eco -chambers. Burdens humanize us.

Jury Duty Appreciation Week takes place every 2nd week of May. It is a time to honour jurors for their service, and acknowledge the importance of the jury system as a part of our democracy. I'm hopeful our leaders will deliver a strong message of thanks to jurors. At the same time our leaders must remind the public of their duty to serve when summoned, and encourage workplaces to support employees serving on a trial or inquest. Support for jury duty is extremely low across Canada (19% Willing to serve on a jury) and familiarity with the jury system is appallingly (9% Familiar with/Understand Jury Duty). Willingness to serve on a jury has been falling consistently over the last four years in Ontario. It is time to invest in jury duty, and the citizens sworn to serve.
