📢 We’re building the world’s first methanol hybrid fuel cell (MHFC) tug. As the next important step forward, we’ll now begin to design this groundbreaking vessel using our TRAnsverse tug design as the platform while working closely together with leading naval architect Robert Allan Ltd. The MHFC will use an electrical propulsion system with methanol fuel cells and batteries to deliver a self-sustained tug with longer endurance and fewer operational constraints than a purely battery-powered vessel. Calculations indicate that the MHFC will prevent approximately 1,300 tonnes of CO2 annually from being emitted, compared to fossil-fuel based vessels of the same dimensions within our global fleet. The MHFC is a major milestone in Svitzer’s commitment to deliver innovations with a significant positive impact on shipping’s road to net zero and is expected to enter operations in the second half of 2025 at the Port of Gothenburg in Sweden. #towageservices #decarbonisation #greenshipping #svitzer 

While the maritime world has had focus on The Laura Mærsk over the last week, being the first Methanol container vessel in the world, i still think too many are unaware of what we are doing at Svitzer! 70 of our tugs are powered by 2nd generation Biofuel! We are in the final design phase of the first Methanol fuel cell hybrid tug. Which will enter operation in late 2025 and compare to the Laura Mærsk Will not carry any diesel. We are continously expanding our solar panel coverage to cover the electrical use of our offices and tugs when tied up and on shore power. We have improved our CO2 emission efficiency by 18% compared to 2020 by the introduction of Biofuel and use of digital tool to monitor and become smarter on how we mobilise to and from jobs. We are working closely with main engine manufacturer to find retrofit solutions to our existing fleet while developing new technology for the use of future fuels. We will soon get the delivery of the first transverse Tug which will revolutionize the way we perform towage with reduction up to 40% during specific operations. A lot to be proud of being in the Maersk Group, but in my view as much if not more to work for Svitzer!

Med Marine has signed a significant contract with Svitzer, a leading global towage operator, for the construction of three advanced new tugs. These tugs, which are part of the MED-A2885 series, are each 28 meters in length and boast an impressive bollard pull of 80 tonnes. Designed by the Canadian Naval Architect Robert Allan, the tugs belong to RAstar 2800 series. This design showcases their exceptional efficiency and remarkable terminal and escort capabilities, making them the perfect choice for Svitzer's demanding operations.
