Attended a really enjoyable and pertinent session today presented by @DCEO around the emergence of GLP-1's in the workplace and society. It was a great panel, moderated by Will Maddox, that included two physicians, Rick Snyder MD from HeartPlace and Shealynn Buck, MD, Tony Willoughby Pharm D from Stellus Rx, and Marianne Fazen from the DFW BUSINESS GROUP ON HEALTH. Highlights included: **70% of Texans have a BMI >27 which aligns with FDA approval of these drugs for the treatment of obesity. What downstream effects does utilization of GLP 1's have on Cardiology and even Orthopedic Surgery **One of the largest employers in TX originally approved coverage of these drugs, but backed away when RX costs increased by $5 million per month for 18 months. **As many as 2/3 of patients who start use, drop after 12 months **The net price of this drug has dropped 40% according to Novo Nordisk, but that hasn't translated into reduced cost for employers. (PBM's anyone?) **Expect hard, embedded guidelines promoting use from medical societies in the next 12 months **A study by Lockton that included 900 employers and 4 million lives showed 3.8x greater utilization among females aged 35-45 with very minimal indication of either diabetes or cardiac issues which these products are being advertised to address. **Employer cost is a real issue, especially when you weigh factors including recruitment and retention. **Seems to be an expanding line of business at compound pharmacies. Combine that with a loss leader status (Retail pharmacies tend to lose money on every filled script) and you face an interesting problem. Hopefully there is a follow up session as I think everyone could have continued talking for hours. Our ability to work together to address this issue will be paramount for employers, physicians (Patient Physician Network), health systems and insurers.

I recently collaborated with a group of top young doctors from Brown Medical School, led by #DanielMarino and mentored by #SamirShah, on our latest peer-reviewed article published in AGA's June Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Our work sheds light on the Trends in Consolidation of Gastroenterology Practices. Healthcare consolidation, driven by large health systems, private payers, and pharma & medtech companies, has been gaining momentum over the past few decades. Ongoing consolidation in physician practices, especially in sub-specialties like GI and more recently cardiology, highlights the importance of continuous education and peer-reviewed research for the future generation of physicians in choosing their clinical practice settings. #Healthcare #Research #MedicalEducation

Exciting new research on patient experiences using precision medicine clinics conducting pharmacogenomics-based testing for adverse drug reactions! A recent study surveyed 67 patients to identify what they valued most and where improvements could be made. Results showed that patients valued feeling respected by staff, receiving education, and quick appointments. They also reported increased confidence in medication usage. Suggestions for improvements included better communication, expanded services, and education for healthcare providers. This study highlights the importance of patient experience in precision medicine care. Chronic wounds affect ~100 million patients worldwide, inflicting significant pain and costing health systems around the world billions.
