The revelation that Nigeria’s National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) lacks the funds to overhaul its crumbling pipeline infrastructure underscores the deep dysfunction within the country’s energy sector. At the 2024 Energy and Labour Summit, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, offered a stark assessment: pipelines, many dating back to the 1960s and 1970s, have become a significant vulnerability in the nation’s energy security. https://lnkd.in/dkw2ZP4w

The Nigerian oil sector is experiencing significant growth, boasting a total of 246 operational fields, marking a notable 12 percent surge since 2019. This growth is attributed to the positive impact of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), which promotes governance, administrative efficiency, attractive fiscal regimes, and community provisions, fostering a peaceful investment climate. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ewd_2AxP Additionally, active oil rigs increased from 15 to 16 in February. While a number of challenges remain, the industry requires an integrated approach covering infrastructure, transportation, and security, promoting stability, sustainability, and resilience in the energy sector. Collaboration among government agencies, security forces, industry stakeholders, and international partners will be crucial for implementing targeted initiatives. "Nigerians were promised a brighter future, a future free from the chokehold of fuel subsidies but that future seems to be receding further into the distance with each missed deadline and regulatory misstep. The blame is squarely on the trio of NNPCL, NUPRC and NMDPRA – and their failure to leverage on the PIA 2021 to reduce inefficiencies, engender transparency and drive profitability in the sector." For President Tinubu, it may well be past time to confront this reality. The nation’s energy sector, the lifeblood of the economy, is in urgent need of a fresh start. It is time for President Tinubu to chart a fresh course for Nigeria’s energy sector out of the present darkness and into a brighter future. Read my opinion on the Mele Kyari-led NNPC Limited, Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) (NMDPRA) here: https://lnkd.in/dpp3RKSb

THE LAST PETROSTATE Guyana’s Oil Boom in the Global Energy Transition The energy transition presents a wide variety of challenges to different countries. As I have dug deeper into country case studies, I have noticed how varied the experience has been. We can learn a lot from global experiences, but each country faces a set of unique challenges. Guyana - the topic of my latest Substack - is an extreme case. A tiny country with a literal ocean of oil, at a time when oil demand is facing downward pressure. Will Guyana, the last petrostate, avoid problems that countries like Nigeria and Venezuela have faced? Time will tell. Read on to learn more about that fateful cup of coffee in the picture.
