United States Department of Defense Chief Digital and AI Office Hosts First GIDE Industry Insights Forum The Department of Defense's (DoD) DoD Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO), in collaboration with the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (OUSD R&E) and the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), hosted the inaugural Global Information Dominance Experiments (GIDE) Industry Insights Forum at the Hyatt Regency Reston in Virginia. This event aimed to foster collaboration between private industry and the DoD to address AI needs and enhance digital capabilities. Highlights included discussions on the Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control (CJADC2) and presentations on the Open Data and Applications Government-owned Interoperable Repositories (Open DAGIR) program. The forum underscored the CDAO’s commitment to leveraging industry innovation and fostering partnerships to scale AI and digital infrastructure within the DoD. Congratulations to Team Defence Information for putting on a great DI24 event this week. I was delighted to be able to contribute to one of the panels, speaking on accelerating the adoption of technology and AI. I highlighted what we might learn from two global implementations within #IBM - AskHR and IBM Consulting Advantage - plus how we are innovating with a defence department to scale #AI models safely and confidently with sound #governance and risk management. I summarised the learning as: 1. The "how" is as important as the "what" - rethink processes and empower domain experts. 2. Move to a single engagement layer underpinned with technology as you simplify and automate. 3. https://lnkd.in/e-UEbqMF The 2023 AI Adoption Strategy addresses key outcomes and strategic goals. However, the culture of the DoD will eat the strategy for lunch if the CDAO cannot mobilize collective strategic action. There is a strategic gap between what senior leaders want to happen and what will/is happening at the lowest levels of DoD. Actors at lower levels of the DoD, such as acquisition program offices, can be slow to accept change and adoption. Either because they don't have or know what the AI tools are or because they don't know how to implement AI. Actors at lower levels of the DoD need interactions that communicate new meanings that deploy the power to change. For adoption of AI to take hold, disruption needs to occur in order to raise the possibility of people at lower levels acting counter to existing behaviors, norms and beliefs. The CDAO needs help to institute and instantiate the adoption of AI; the risk is the pace of adoption or change is too slow or incremental and it takes too long or doesn't happen at all.

On Wednesday, January 17 NIST will host a virtual workshop on Secure Development Practices for AI Models to fulfill their obligation to develop a companion resource to the NIST Secure Software Development Framework (SSDF). NIST's other Executive Order 14110 responsibilities, among many, include creating guidelines for agencies to evaluate the efficacy of AI protections and a plan for promoting and developing AI standards. #NIST #EO14110 #NIST #securedevelopment #AI
