📢[NEWS] Yesterday, the MEPs approved the new #Urban #Wastewater Treatment Directive. With a majority of 481 votes in favour, 79 against, and 26 abstentions, the deal reached with the Council in January 2024 marks a significant step towards leveraging urban wastewater standards and protecting public health and the environment in Europe. 👏 Water Europe welcomes this directive that is perfectly aligned with our vision of achieving a #WaterSmartSociety. Over the previous period, we developed together with our Policy Advisory Committee, our community, and partners a number of positions that have been instrumental in the process: ✅ Joint statement for the promotion of access to Sanitation for All in Europe (October 2020) https://lnkd.in/eVuCfBjv ✅WE Position paper for a Green Circular And smart urban wastewater treatment directive (October 2020 – updated in June 2021) https://lnkd.in/ekRhnf-4 ✅Joint Statement: The polluter-pays principle should remain at the core of the Union’s wastewater treatment legislation (March 2023) Joint-Statement-EPR-UWWTD_-V2.pdf (watereurope.eu) 🔔 Now, we call upon the Council to join the European Parliament and the European Commission in supporting this text for a greener, circular, and smarter urban wastewater treatment directive. DO you know about The GEF CReW+ project? The project is “An integrated approach to water and wastewater management in the Wider Caribbean Region using innovative solutions and sustainable financing mechanisms” that provides innovative and nature-based solutions to mitigate the effects of partially treated or untreated wastewater on the environment and public health. 🔸 Reform national policies and legislation for domestic wastewater management 🔸 Improve national regulations for sewage discharge to the marine environment 🔸 Promote greater reuse of treated domestic wastewater 🔸 Improve overall wastewater management including the use of cleaner technologies 🔸 Monitor and evaluate current wastewater management practices including impacts on the marine environment The GEF CReW+ Project values water as a precious resource and applies the concept of Integrated Water and Wastewater Resources Management (IWWM) based on the four Rs of the circular economy approach: reduce, reuse, recycle, and recover. The project treats wastewater not as waste, but as a valuable resource with reuse potential in agriculture, industry and other commercial sectors. Treating wastewater safely supports regional efforts for sustainable development by reducing pollution, safeguarding marine biodiversity and protecting human health. Key Objectives of the GEF CReW+ Project: 1. Reduce pollution from wastewater: The project aims to minimize the environmental and public health impacts of partially treated or untreated wastewater by implementing sustainable wastewater treatment and management systems. 2. Promote integrated water resource management (IWWM): The project advocates for an IWWM approach that considers the interconnectedness of water resources and emphasizes water conservation, reuse, and recycling. 3. Enhance financing mechanisms: The project seeks to develop and implement sustainable financing mechanisms to support the long-term viability of water and wastewater management projects. 4. Strengthen regional cooperation and knowledge sharing: The project facilitates collaboration among WCR countries to exchange best practices, share expertise, and promote knowledge dissemination in the water and wastewater sector.
