Have we cracked the code on recycling and managing the lifecycle of EV batteries? EV batteries are a marvel of modern engineering, but they come with a significant environmental responsibility. As these batteries reach the end of their usable life in vehicles, we're faced with the challenge of what to do with them. Simply disposing of these large, complex batteries is not an option due to their environmental impact and the valuable materials they contain. The key lies in developing effective recycling processes and finding innovative second-life applications. Recycling can recover critical materials like lithium, cobalt, and nickel, making the production of new batteries more sustainable and less dependent on mining. This not only helps in reducing environmental damage but also in controlling the costs associated with raw material procurement. Second-life applications present another exciting avenue. Used EV batteries can still hold significant charge, making them suitable for less demanding applications like energy storage systems. Integrating these batteries into renewable energy systems, for instance, can help stabilise the grid and store excess energy from solar or wind power. Cracking this code could revolutionize the EV industry. It would reduce the environmental footprint of EVs, lower the cost of battery production, and potentially make EVs more accessible and popular. It’s a win-win for the environment and the economy. What innovative solutions have you seen or would like to see for the recycling and second-life use of EV batteries, and how do you think these advancements could transform the EV industry?

We cannot be solving one problem and creating more downstream problems for ourselves. This is not what the global sustainable pivot is about. There is no better illustration that we need to understand and embrace systems thinking and a multi stakeholder approach when formulating problems and their iterative solutions. From a systems perspective, AEIR and Netzium's approach towards electrification presents the unique opportunity to repurpose batteries to be used in battery energy storage systems (BESS), greatly enhancing grid resilience and reducing precious resources and ultimately LCOE. #technology #bess #lcoe #resilentgrod #energygrid #energytransition #aeir #netzium

Mercedes-Benz's battery recycling plant, which commenced operations in 2023, has Primobius as its technology partner. Primobius is a joint venture established by the German plant and mechanical engineering company SMS Group and the Australian process technology development company Neometals. This recycling plant is part of a collaborative research project with three German universities and is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The scientific research project focuses on the entire process chain of power battery recycling, including logistics and circular reuse, and the partners are making significant contributions to the future large-scale development of the German power battery recycling industry. RESOLAR is a deeply decarbonized solar panel recycling group. As the first photovoltaic recycling company in China to receive venture capital,RESOLAR has advanced technology and rich industry experience. RESOLAR has built the first 10,000-ton photovoltaic recycling production line in China in Fengyang, Anhui, with the capacity to process 900 tons of decommissioned PV modules per month, producing recycled glass, aluminum, 6N-grade silicon materials and silver, and has achieved significant economic benefits. In addition, RESOLAR cooperated with Trina Solar and Flat Group to successfully manufacture the world's first fully recycled photovoltaic module, demonstrating the commercial prospects of fully recycled modules. Research Scientist | Specialist in computational evaluation of sustainable plastics and solid-state batteries
The U.S. Department of Energy recently gave out over 3 billion dollars in funding specifically for battery technology, and with that came funding for battery recycling! https://lnkd.in/gkeszM2C Recycling Today highlights many companies which were selected to recycle batteries and extract graphite, lithium, cobalt and active materials. Recovery of these materials is extremely important to slow the extraction of natural resources out of the earth. It's great to see that some of the companies are partnering with EV manufacturers, in order to aid with collection of the batteries. Many times the organization of collection can be a barrier to large scale recycling. Also, materials are being recovered in a range of states, from pure metals, to lithium-iron-phosphate, to black mass. Finding uses for these materials in all of their states is a win, even if it means recycling the materials to outside the battery industry.
