The typical spy is middle-aged and well-educated. This is, because by then, it’s more likely that they have reached a position where they have access to information of interest to foreign state actors. It’s also more likely for them to have developed a lifestyle or vulnerabilities that could be exploited by someone else. The young agents in a recently exposed network in Poland were not typical spy material; they didn’t have access to any secrets, nor did they have the time to develop any vulnerabilities, but as young people often do – they needed money. If extended, extraordinary ASIO questioning powers require more rigorous safeguards and independent oversight. We welcome evidence from security agencies that the power to question minors under the scheme, through the issuing of a minor questioning warrant, should be removed because these powers have proven to have no practical utility and are redundant to legitimate security objectives.
