Good morning #linkedinfam 🎬 2023's Top Film3/Web3 Innovations and the Visionaries Shaping Our Digital Future I did the research so you don´t have to and - I love years ends lists. HEre is a list about film3 / web3 projects that actually raised the bar for film3 in 2023. At least in my opinion. There are also some relly influential and great people like Miguel Faus, straybits and Jordan Bayne - who fight endlessly for more democratization in the film industry. And like always: This is NOT financial advice. DYOR. 🚀 #Film3 #Web3Revolution #web3 #film #2023 #ai #filmproduction #blockchain #crypto

We can't control the people who pay to produce films, and they have the right to spend their money (and their investors' money) as they see fit, on the projects they see fit to produce. What we CAN control is finding ways to produce our own work. What limits us is the desire to be paid and recognized and feted, which puts us under the control of the people who can pay, recognize and fete us. So, you have a script. You create a YouTube channel, pull up a chair and start reading the script, on camera. BAM! Your script is produced. Now of course you would rather chew off your thumbs than "waste" a script that way, "producing" it to three people who accidentally happen upon your YouTube channel. Well then, prepare to continue being under the control of the film industry's powers-that-be. Now, of course there are other ways to expose your work. Ultra low budget films. Taped table reads. So, start writing scripts that can be produced for that ultra low budget, or organize taped table reads and release the edited tape as a feature film. "Yeah, but even a ULB costs more than I can afford." Afford, or are willing to pay? So you're willing to blast the studios for not paying $50 million to produce your script, but you're not willing to pay or find say... $10,000 to produce your script yourself? Really? See, I believe that it's okay to put yourself under the control of others in order to get your work produced, but I don't believe you can have it both ways: give up control and yet insist on dictating how the producers spend their money or handle your script. Look, I recently rewrote one of my feature scripts to be shot for an ultra low budget. My producing partner and I were considering how to produce it, when a director/producer asked to buy the script for money upfront (very, very small amount of money upfront) and a few (very few) gross points. She took the script, produced it, took my name off as screenwriter and gave me "story by" credit only (which is not as exciting as that is in television) and when I asked her to restore my name as screenwriter, sharing that credit with her (she apparently made some changes to the script in the process of shooting it), she stopped communicating with me, and the script has been listed as "in post production" for like... two years. Why did this happen? Because I gave up my power and though I AM bitching about that, who is to blame but ME? I could have produced that rewritten script for $10,000. Or done a taped table read. Instead, I've lost it forever. It will either come out with my diminished credit or it will never come out at all. How's THAT working for you, Rob? Well... it's pretty fucked up, and I realize what a huge mistake I made. I gave up control and didn't even get paid well for it. MY fault. MY weakness. MY artistic cowardice and unwillingness to do and pay what it took to produce my own work. So yeah, you have the right to bitch, but... who is REALLY at fault for ANY of this situation? Us.
IT JUST TAKES ONE OPPORTUNITY Cord Jefferson has spoken for so many filmmakers in his Oscar winning speech. We fight everyday for those opportunities. To be heard, to be seen, and to be given that one shot to prove we're worth it. There are other Scorsese's, Nolan's and Gerwig's out there. It's just that no one wants to take a gamble on them. Instead they'll produce yet another $200M movie about a superhero origin story we really don't care about. Keep pushing and persevering. You might be picking up that Oscar and telling the world exactly how it is. 🏆 #Oscars2024 #IndependentFilmmaker #IndependentFilm #FutureOfFilm

"It's not Life or Death, it's a beautiful day, we're doing something that we love, we get to be together and watch the sun go down, we get to have all those things in one moment and we've got to be in that moment, and not get confused by what matters and what doesn't " (Take 2 since the first post formatted oddly). --- "Jed Talk" sharing a story from on the set of our film "The Legacy" that won Best Short Film at Comic Con San Diego, was on Hulu, and screened at 30+ film festivals and had multi-state theatrical distribution. Making the point that you can build an environment of trust, you don't have to treat people as human robots, you can have folks feel comfortable in their jobs and still make an award-winning film or have a successful business. -- And in fact, that approach makes sustained success more likely. Let me know what you think!
