In my Instructional Leadership classes, we delve deeply into the development of a guiding vision for teaching and learning. Our recent discussions have brought to light the diverse influences shaping our perceptions of what a "good" classroom looks and feels like. Our understanding is often molded by our extensive personal school experiences--what Dan Lortie characterized as an "apprenticeship of observation". And for most of us, school looked like one teacher per classroom of 25 students sitting in rows of desks and reading the same textbooks. In class, we discussed how the portrayal of educators in popular films, which often celebrate teachers as heroic figures–think Dead Poets’ Society, Stand and Deliver, To Sir with Love– rarely challenge the conventional framework of education. However inspiring these stories are, they seldom push us to reimagine the full potential of educational environments. I’m committed to exploring and sharing resources that envision what education can truly become. (A standout example is the documentary Most Likely to Succeed). Recently, I was inspired by this gem: The First Class: The Story of Crosstown High School, which serves as a powerful example of the transformative possibilities in education. Saw this in a school's strategic direction. What a fitting vision to include! Here's to a challenging, but much needed and rewarding transformation journey ahead: “The fact is that given the challenges we face, education doesn’t need to be reformed - it needs to be transformed. The key to this transformation is not to standardise education, but to personalise it, to build achievement on discovering the individual talents of each child, to put students in an environment where they want to learn and where they can naturally discover their true passions.” - Sir Ken Robinson.

It is crucial to take pride in one's accomplishments and growth. Recognizing the hard work and progress made can be a potent motivator and instill confidence. It is essential to celebrate every step forward and leverage it as a driving force to continue striving towards one's goals. Maintaining this perspective can have a profound impact on one's professional and academic pursuits.

It's as if I won the jackpot of students, because each and every one of you brings a unique brilliance and determination to our learning space. Watching you grow and flourish throughout this journey has been awe-inspiring. From the first day, I knew we were embarking on something special - a shared commitment to personal and professional growth that has taken us to new heights. We've faced challenges, pushed boundaries, and discovered strengths we never knew we had. Together, we've shattered the glass ceiling of self-doubt and soared as a united force of unstoppable learners. Your wins, both big and small, deserve to be acknowledged and celebrated beyond measure. Whether it's landing that dream job, boldly stepping into leadership roles, launching successful entrepreneurial ventures, or simply conquering personal goals, each milestone you achieve fuels my passion for teaching and mentoring. Here's one simple action every school could take tomorrow to improve: Study your bright spots. Instead of complicated action plans or another spreadsheet, do this: 1) Pick the priority -- what do you want to get better at? 2) Find the brightest spots -- who does this the best? 3) Understand what makes them bright -- what are the 3-4 actions or mindsets these people consistently do that has led to the results they've seen? 4) Don't make it a secret -- use land, sea, and air to share what you learned. Connect what those bright spots do to the results you want others to achieve. 5) Champion a "try it out" mentality -- celebrate any and everyone who implements what they learned. We make school improvement more complicated than it needs to be sometimes. Let's simplify it by finding what works. And sharing it with others.

Just started reading the book by Simon Sinek: “Start With Why”; this made me 🧐 curious to hear 👂 the thoughts 💭 of my colleagues and friends here on LinkedIn... What is your Why? Mine is below- what I do, how I do it and why… What I do? Work at Howard Community College as the Teaching and Learning Operations Manager that assists the HST division. How I do it? Show up everyday and complete the tasks using the college Values -INSPIRED( Innovation Nurturing Service and Sustainability Partnerships Integrity Respect Excellence Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) This is along with the mission “Providing pathways to success” and vision “A place to discover greatness in yourself and others “ of the college. With the support of my supervisor and the Division, I assist, their leadership and guidance also helps to keep me grounded and held accountable for my actions. Why I do it? For the students, to see them succeed and for them to have a love of learning and a community where they feel they are welcome, seen and heard and valued. It is a commitment to the students allowing them to continue to grow and learn in a safe and nurturing environment and to be the best that each of them can be individually. I do this by supporting the faculty and staff in the HST Division completing the work they need to complete to teach their courses successfully.
