Customer reporting shouldn't just be accurate, it should be USEFUL. I was talking with one our devs this morning who showed a report they were working on for our customers. The chart didn't make any sense and I couldn't think what I would even do with the information. At that point, they laughed and showed me a conversation they were having with their boss, Wayne Maughan, our head of product. In this world of data-driven decision making, there is a rush to capture and summarize as much information as possible, but are you strategic in structuring your data and your reporting in a way that is truly actionable? Some "useful" thoughts to consider 😏 1️⃣ So, what's the difference between accurate and useful reporting? 📊Accurate customer reporting refers to the correctness and precision of the data presented in the report. However, useful customer reporting goes beyond accuracy and focuses on the relevance and applicability of the data. A useful report presents data in a clear and concise manner, highlighting key insights and trends that can inform decision making and drive action. 2️⃣ How can businesses ensure that their data and reporting are structured in a way that is truly actionable? 🏢To ensure that data and reporting are structured in a way that is truly actionable, start by identifying the key questions and decisions that the data is intended to inform. This will help to determine what data is most relevant and how it should be presented. Visuals should present data in a clear and intuitive manner, making it easier for decision makers to understand and act on the insights provided. It's also important to regularly review and update reporting structures to ensure that they remain relevant and useful. 3️⃣ What are some common pitfalls to avoid when trying to make data-driven decisions? ⚠️It's possible to rely too heavily on data for decisions WITHOUT considering other factors (i.e, ignoring limitations and potential biases of the data or failing to communicate the insights and implications of the data). So, take a holistic approach to decision making, considering both quantitative and qualitative factors, and should invest in data literacy and communication skills to ensure that insights are effectively communicated and acted upon.
