For many executives, serving within the nonprofit sector offers a meaningful path to leveraging their holistic career experience and functional expertise to give back to their communities and the causes they care about. Serving on a nonprofit board helps leaders broaden their perspectives on corporate social responsibility, community engagement, and nonprofit governance. There are many reasons why executives choose to serve with nonprofits. They typically blend a leader's desire to make a positive impact with seeking a sense of fulfillment outside of their primary career. Whatever the reason, it can be quite personal. Nonprofit board directors do not get paid for their service, and so, a sense of fulfillment and growth from the experience is often a sufficient reward.   Many leaders across The DCRO Institute's global community serve on nonprofit boards. Their reasons for joining are as varied as the boards themselves. Here, we share insights from four of our Qualified Risk Directors® on their "why," advice for other aspiring nonprofit directors, and how the experience has shaped their perspective as a leader. The benefits of nonprofit board service are many and impact people across many dimensions. Reflecting on my journey and the choices I've made, I've come to realize the profound impact of serving on the board of a non-profit organization. It's not merely a commitment to the organization's mission but a significant opportunity for personal and professional growth. Choosing to serve on a non-profit board is a decision that should be made with intentionality. When I align myself with a board whose mission deeply resonates with me, I remember the words of Winston Churchill, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." This philosophy has guided me to align my actions with my core values, fostering a deeper connection and commitment to the work. It ensures that my contributions are not only meaningful but impactful. It's a reminder that in the act of giving, we receive so much more in return—lessons in leadership, empathy, and the power of collective action towards a greater good.
