For my summer reading, I started Ken Coleman's "From Paycheck to Purpose." There's a lot of good stuff in it, but there's one particular part that hit me and I wanted to share. As someone who has hired thousands of people and helped a multitude of others to succeed in their careers, I really like Ken's advice to get promoted. Three Actions That Get You Promoted: 1) Know your role. 2) Accept your role. 3) Maximize your role. "In order to demonstrate that you're ready for the next level, focus on these three promotable actions in the now." That is great advice! So many employees want to skip the step they're at without really digging in and doing the job. Yes, you have to be able to do the job you want to get promoted to, but you have to demonstrate that you can do the job you have now! #leadership, #humanresources, #readytowork

Dare to say, "Yes!" My brother and (now) sister-in-law both did on this beautiful Oregon beach last week. Actually, the "Yes!" I'm referring to was my answer when they asked me to officiate their wedding some time ago. Why would I focus on that answer? Because the easier answer for me would have been, "No." "No" is easy because it's easier to stand on the sidelines and not take a risk. There's no pressure; just show up on time (we arrived at the last minute - but that's another story!). But, there's also no reward. There would have been no joy in being right next to my brother as he cried while reciting his vows (so did I). No joy in seeing my future sister-in-law walk down to the beach that we'd been vacationing at since we were kids. And, no reward in knowing I helped those dear to me when they asked for me to be there for them. So, I ask you: Have you been offered an opportunity to do something that is in alignment with your values? If so, would it be challenging - even difficult - to agree to do that something? While deciding, I urge you to consider how you will feel about your decision after the opportunity has concluded. I drew this in 2019 as a reminder to myself. I think it’s easy to become hardened when you’re in a supervisory or management position, as becoming so is one of the ways we often shield ourselves from the stress of the job. But it’s not necessarily the healthy way to do it! Recently I’ve been thinking about how I can embrace leadership roles without letting the experience harden me. This image came to mind. We often have many things going on at once, but we need to stay flexible and go with the flow. What are some ways you’ve kept from becoming hardened during your career?

Steve VanderSchie - Never accept that you've reached your potential. CAPT R.L. Dubberly, USN (Ret.) - Always be ready to leave an organization that compromises your moral compass. Zechariah Carmack - Be a mentor; Build someone up mentally and physically. Give them the opportunity to take their shot. Robert (Bob) Sharp - Stay calm, cool, collected, and work the problem. Admiral Bill Gortney - Use your influence to give someone a 2nd chance. CDR Job Price, USN - Remind everyone of their value and how their role contributes to the mission. Ryan Scott & Sam Cooper - Make fun. Find the intersection of your work and passion. Cheryl Friedman & Libby Johnson McKee - Pay attention to detail and let your work speak for you. Seek out meaty problems that impact the world. Marvin Ellison - "All the easy jobs are taken." The hard ones left are the ones worth doing. Amita Agnihotri - Provide the space for your team to exercise their strengths. Jennifer Curby-Börowski - Strive to create a team culture that stands out from day one. Just celebrated 17 years at Crown. While it’s not a milestone, it’s a significant moment to reflect on the past year of experiences and envision the future. I once saw a poster that said, “If you are not serving a customer, you better be serving someone who is.” This ethos has guided me throughout my 32-year career, reminding me of the importance of support and service in every role. Over the years, I've had the honor of witnessing many individuals join and transition. What remains constant is the value of investing in people and watching them grow.
