President, & CEO, CPI Twin Cities ● Maximizing Potential, Leadership Development, Executive Coaching, Career Management
Have you ever wondered how a new executive builds his/her reputation? We recently inquired of a friend how the new President of her nonprofit organization was doing. She responded with “Not well!”, and further shared three observations: 1) He did not appear to be concentrating on critical matters; 2) He was questioning the executive team’s activities versus empowering them; 3) He handed out a book entitled “The Five Dysfunctions of a Team”. Her last observation made us curious, and we asked her if she had read the book that outlines a popular team-building model. She admitted she had not, but the title of the book left the team feeling that the new President saw them as “dysfunctional”. The growing perceptions of this President within the organization further deepened our belief that everything counts as a new leader onboards in his/her executive role. Founder / CEO of EduSpots | 2021 Global Teacher Prize Finalist & 2024 Gratitude Network Fellow | ✍️ Sharing my live learnings on community building, education & change.
Today I’m reflecting on how we can live out the values we aim to represent as organisational leaders. 🤔 If we are about grassroots voice, let’s not allow our time to only be consumed by the words of donors or high level influencers. If we claim to be impact-driven, let’s not waste organisational funds on luxury hotels while communities lack basic resources. If we encourage self-discipline, let’s make focused decisions and keep on moving without craving a desire to be appreciated. If build non-hierarchical structures, let’s ensure we don’t have different rules for different people. If we embed empathy, let’s take some time to walk the work of different roles in the organisation. If we request honesty, let’s be direct with our team on what we need and where the gaps are. And if we are about play, let’s take time to add some joy! 😜 🤸♀️ 📷 (Some of) EduSpots' Spot coordination & programmes squad ... all coming from community Spot volunteer backgrounds. 📢 PSA: This recently released guide, ‘Building Youth Leadership in Violence Prevention’ from FVREE is a fantastic resource for professionals and practitioners seeking to engage with young people as part of their various programs of work. FVREE, a specialist family violence service in the Eastern Metropolitan Region of Melbourne, has created the guide, in partnership with young people who have graduated from their Leaders for Change Program. Engaging with young people through consultation, collaboration, and co-design is a critical part of our work here at Deakin and the broader sector, so it's great to see the creation of a resource that: ➡ offers practical strategies for program development, ➡ provides advice on facilitating engaging sessions for young people and, ➡ introduces creative approaches for gathering feedback. There’s useful guidance to foster effective consultation, including the need to be flexible, ensure you hear from young people directly regarding their needs, preferences and concerns, consult with experts for insights on recruitment and obtaining consent, and (most importantly!) to compensate those who share their time and contributions appropriately. As we continue to look for ways to improve our practice and to learn from others, it's great to see resources like this being made widely available! Access the resource: https://lnkd.in/gt9zDe5t
