Smaller towns are usually subjected to lower-quality drinking water due to resource-deprived and unmaintained water providers.  In some cases, they lack water infrastructure completely.    These high-risk communities need to be at the top of our nation’s priority list. When state and federal resources are allocated for drinking water projects across the country, it is vital that lawmakers consider the communities across the nation that lack adequately functioning community water systems. Even in the year 2024, disadvantaged and minority communities have been forced to look beyond the tap for safe drinking water due to dated and faltering water systems in the U.S. While the $56 billion investment for clean drinking water from the Biden Administration is historic, the funding does not provide the necessary amount needed to address the diverse range of water system issues. These companies con­trib­ute more than $1 bil­lion an­nu­ally to the Com­mon­wealth’s econ­omy, con­sis­tently pro­vide higher-qual­ity wa­ter and have dras­ti­cally fewer en­vi­ron­men­tal vi­o­la­tions. On top of that, the companies di­rectly em­ploy over 2,000 Penn­syl­va­nians with an av­er­age an­nual com­pen­sa­tion of $100,000 in­clud­ing ben­e­fits — well-pay­ing jobs that can sus­tain fam­i­lies. “A death potion for the river.” ☠️ The impact of cheap chicken combined with dishonest and irresponsible water companies releasing raw sewage into the UK waterways, has created an environment where fish cannot survive. ❌🐟 So the birds that feed on them can’t survive. ❌ 🦅 And the mammals that feed on them can’t survive. 🦦 And so the entire ecosystem of the river gradually collapses, under the weight of the surplus nitrogen, animal excrement and life stifling algae. ⚠️ As an individual, the best thing you can do to help end this cycle of destruction is to choose a plant based diet. 🌱 #govegan #plantbasedfood #saveourrivers #climatecrisis

What a wonderful panel at the #waterYPsummit. It's been amazing to hear more about balancing infrastructure needs with affordability and equity. A few of the most meaningful takeaways have been that we can take it for granted, what a valued and treasured resource water and wastewater quality and infrastructure are. Not every person or community has the same access to these resources and their importance can't be overstated. We have to be cognizant of what communities need, how we spend our resources and how we develop priorities. There are a lot of shifting priorities and needs in the water industry, but water can be a chance to get something right for communities, for public health and for the environment.
