Everyone in the U.S. owes a huge debt to the Briggs, Davis, Brown, Belton, Bulah, and hundreds of other families who made great sacrifices to bring anti-discrimination cases to fight segregation. These cases, brought by NAACP & what is now NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. helped advance true democracy in this nation. Five cases were compiled into one as the matter headed to the Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education. Brown was not the first case, Briggs v. Elliot holds that claim. But the Brown case was brought in Topeka, Kansas. The remaining cases, including Briggs, were all brought in southern states. The decision was made to lead with the Brown case to send a message that this issue wasn't just a Southern problem. Segregation still exists throughout the entire U.S. In fact, some of the nation's most residentially segregated communities are in northern states. Millions still experience the harm and impact of segregation so our fight is not over. #WeAreAllBrown https://lnkd.in/ekfJcpr9

Adrienne Adams, the Speaker of the New York City Council, has recently made a significant decision by appointing Yusef Salaam as the chairman of the Public Safety Committee. Salaam, a legislative newcomer, is notably known for being wrongfully imprisoned as a teenager in the infamous "Central Park 5" case. He now represents Harlem's 9th Council District. His new role gives him oversight of the NYPD, a committee known for its intense hearings. Salaam's appointment is seen as adding a unique perspective to the committee due to his personal experiences with the justice system. His priorities include addressing public safety through measures such as removing illegal guns from the streets and ensuring high standards of law enforcement accountability. However, this appointment coincides with Speaker Adams' decision to remove several left-leaning members from their committee chairs, notably Tiffany Cabán, Chi Ossé, and Shahana Hanif, all members of the Council’s Progressive Caucus. This move has sparked speculation about political motivations, especially considering these members' opposition to last year's city budget. In place of the removed members, Farah Louis, Carlina Rivera, and Alexa Avilés have been appointed as new committee chairs. Despite the controversy, there are positive developments for the Progressive Caucus. Lincoln Restler, co-chair of the caucus, was named chair of the Council Governmental Operations, State, and Federal Legislation Committee, and Sandy Nurse will now chair the Criminal Justice Committee, overseeing the city’s Department of Correction. Overall, these changes in the NYC Council highlight a dynamic political landscape, where strategic appointments and committee reassignments can significantly impact the city's governance and policy direction. #NYCCouncil #PublicSafetyCommittee #YusefSalaam #AdrienneAdams #PoliticalShakeup #CentralPark5 #CityPolitics #ProgressiveCaucus #CommitteeReassignments #NYPDoversight #RestorativeJustice #NewYorkCityPolitics

After nearly 13 hours of a marathon hearing in Austin last week, I was able to present oral and written testimony in support of Texas' Countywide Polling Place Program and encourage legislators to keep this critical voting measure in place. My testimony focused on the critical impact the Countywide Polling has for voters with accessibility needs and voters of color, who traditionally face longer lines and wait times to cast a ballot. Year after year, voter turnout at the polls is significantly impacted by the distance to the nearest polling center and the methods of transportation available to voters --Just a quarter-mile increase in distance to the nearest polling center has been shown to translate to a one to three percentage point decrease in voter turnout. Given that 1 in 20 households in Texas does not possess a personal vehicle and more than 3.5 million Texans lack access to public transportation, any increase in wait times or travel distance will have a significant disenfranchising effect on a large segment of Texans who are eager to vote but lack the means to travel to their polling location. This impact would fall even more heavily on Black communities where more than 1 in 10 households do not possess a vehicle and where one in five people is living below the poverty level and will struggle to arrange alternative paid transportation. #votingrights #texas #voterturnout

I am passing along the ABA's Taskforce for American Democracy's call to action being made to lawyers, educators, and bar associations. It's a worthy effort that makes concrete recommendations for individuals and organizations. The task force is a bi-partisan group. Former Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Charles Johnson and former DC Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Michael Luttig serve as its chair. The task force reports numbers about Americans' perceptions of their democracy that should concern anyone who cares about democracy in the United States: 52% of young American adults have little to no trust in the American government, 25% of Americans believe violence is an acceptable response to an election loss, and 38% of Americans are willing to accept an authoritarian government to address their concerns with the government's direction. Misinformation and intentional disinformation played a significant role in these numbers. The task force calls on lawyers, educators, and bar associations to take an active role in countering disinformation efforts to help repair the damage done to American democracy.

ICYMI - Read CEP's NEW research on how foundations are responding to the U.S. Supreme Court's decisions on affirmative action. ❓ Amid fear that the rulings would cause a "chilling effect" in grantmaking targeted at racial equity, how were foundations responding in the months immediately following the decisions? ❓ Were grantmakers seeking legal counsel? Having discussions with their grantees? ❓ Were there differences in the responses of foundations led by people of color versus those that are not led by people of color?
