Did You Know? In the mid 1980s, the United States and Europe implemented standards-based accountability for schools, a top-down governmental approach to remedy uneven school performance among learners. High standardized test scores are incentivized with payments to schools. During the same time period, arts education programs have been in consistent decline in the US; however, a recent study among fourth to eighth graders in Houston showed that increasing arts-learning experiences led to improvements in writing achievement and compassion for others. School engagement and college aspirations also increased. What exactly is the problem we are seeking to solve? #DifferentRules

⚠️Spoiler alert⚠️: since pre-pandemic times, teacher attrition has nearly doubled and principals are leaving their positions at an astonishing 5x the previous rate; teacher stress has reduced a bit from the pandemic but remains higher than the average of all working adults— a worrying sign. The education of today's students will shape the future of our society. We can't afford to keep allowing standards to deteriorate: Among eighth-graders, only 31% are proficient in reading, and only 26% are proficient in math. Only 13% of eighth-graders met U.S. history proficiency standards. 7,000 students drop out of high school every day. 55% of educators are considering leaving the profession. 40% report “always” or “very often” being burned out. 44% of public schools self-report being short-staffed. At least 1/3 of Gen Alpha is growing up in single-parent households. Gen Alpha kids spend nearly 5 hours on screens each day for entertainment purposes.

Why is it important to learn about Social Justice, Education, and Technology, and your initial ideas for how you, a future teacher, can integrate these concepts into your teaching? Social justice in education is crucial because it addresses the systematic disparities that exist in many areas of society. Understanding the various cultures, identities, and societal institutions that influence student engagement and opportunities is essential when studying social justice. Teachers can help their pupils develop empathy and ethical thinking by including social justice in their curriculums. That is why it is necessary that we, as educators, incorporate these concepts into the classroom. Incorporating social justice into teaching encourages critical thinking about socio-cultural dynamics and power distributions, both of which are essential skills in our interconnected society. In my future classroom, I will set projects that emphasize the significance of providing every student with equal opportunities for success, regardless of background, by involving everyone and respecting their backgrounds. #EDLT3110_SP24_M71_R7

Forty years providing carbon steel for Rollforming, Stamping and general fabrication. And, when time permitted, rockin a blues piano domestically and internationally.
Tells you all you need to know about the complete failure of Chicago Public Schools. This is staggering. A recipe for failure of children and society. All a bargain between the Chicago Teachers Union and the stream of incompent Mayors. Those that do graduate, reading at an elementary school level. Every student gets passed along. No matter what their academic achievements are or are not. Democrats “leveling the playing field”—a catasphrophe. Much of the same applies to numerous other cities and states. And—-we are competing on the world stage with the Chinese? We are “graduating” ignorant victims from our high schools and colleges. What does this portend? Zero accountability on the part of the Politicians and or educational “professionals.
Less than 1/3 of Chicago grads complete college in expected 4 years

Teachers are leaving America's public schools in droves. School board members can do something about it. Here's how: Many admin do not support teachers: "Limited support from administrators with student behavior pushed [one teacher] to leave his job teaching.... 'I was a ninth-grade teacher and my students were 7th graders emotionally,' he said. 'I felt like I didn’t even get to teach.'" School boards can: 1. Get full access to school discipline policies and records of enforcement. 2. Enact a "no nonsense" discipline policy. 3. Hold administrators accountable for poor discipline in their schools. Teachers and students deserve better.

Culture war is inherent to public schooling, which forces people with differing values, desires, and needs to fund a single system of government schools. Cato’s Public Schooling Battle Map shows that the number of values‐ and identity‐based conflicts in America’s public schools has surpassed 4,000 entries.
As the Public Schooling Battle Map Passes 4,000 Conflicts, Is Reality Starting to Sink In?

Last year, Baltimore city schools received a record $1.6 billion plus an additional $799 million in COVID funds The result? 0 students tested proficient in math in 40% of schools. 0 students. The person in charge of Baltimore schools is Dr. Sonja Santelises. She earns over $445k per year. But wait, it gets worse… At the top 5 schools in Baltimore, only 11% of students are proficient in math. The. Top. Five. Schools. Maybe, her salary should equate to how well her teaching staff does. Did they allow these students to actually graduate? What about reading proficiency? What type of future can they expect with everything computerized?

While most know Chicago Public Schools are a dysfunctional mess, here are some facts that may provide some perspective as to the scale of that dysfunction: Last year, just 11% of Black students in grades 3-8 tested at grade level in reading and 6% in math; while only 10% of Black students met the national SAT reading proficiency standard, and only 7.9% met proficiency in math. Yet the district graduated 83% of the students. No failing schools have been reconstituted despite a number having no children reading at grade level and 100% of the teachers passing their evaluations. All this while spending $30,000 a year per student. To make matters worse, the Chicago Board of Education has officially taken a stand against charter public schools (as well as magnet and selective enrollment schools), which significantly outperform those run by the district. Students, families and all citizens of Chicago deserve better. Unfortunately that will not happen until we all stand up and demand it.
