Part 3 Why? Schools with character education missions can increase job satisfaction, well-being, and teacher motivation. You may be interested to know there are currently 57,669 teaching positions in Arizona and over 142,000 fully certified teachers in the state. This seems to suggest many qualified teachers in AZ are choosing not to teach. Character education could potentially improve the work environment and retain qualified teachers in the classroom. https://ow.ly/TelO50QbAsk

Master (Computer Science - ISC, IBDP & IGCSE) | Google Certified Educator | Assistant Housemaster (Pastoral leadership) | Gold Medalist | AI Research Scholar |
In a close-knit residential school setting, a master's relationship with students oscillates between 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 and 𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. The phrase "𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝, 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝" encapsulates the rollercoaster of emotions and experiences defining the relationship between masters and their students in a boarding school setting. The termination signifies the moments of disagreement, disciplinary actions, and the inevitable clashes when diverse personalities share close quarters. Through shared meals, late-night study sessions, midterms, tutorial meetings, events, and casual conversations in hushed corridors, a master gains insights and a profound understanding of the student's aspirations, fears, and dreams, establishing a deep connection with them. I am currently crafting a book (𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝, 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝) that delves into my experiences in a boarding school setting, encompassing both my time as a student and later as a teacher. #2024AmbitionUnleashed Image Source: DALL·E 3

A recent study by (Zou et al 2023) draws on key factors we can control as educators. Teachers’ own intrinsic motivation towards teaching showed significant positive correlation on students intrinsic motivation. Additionally, the relationship between student and teacher impacted learners intrinsic motivation. These are all reasonable conclusions we could jump to prior to the study. However, this study does act as a reminder that our own individual passion to learn, improve and intrinsically motivate ourselves can significantly impacts learners’ outcomes. Have a great week Ross!

❌ Complete homework because if you don't, you'll get a detention = extrinsic motivation. ✅ Complete your homework because it will lead to a long-term overall goal E.g. grade, school trip, higher education = intrinsic motivation How could developing intrinsic motivation improve student engagement, and how can teachers do it? https://lnkd.in/eWXV5tf2 (Graphic: Oudeyer and Kaplan, 2007)
