❗𝐅𝐋𝐄𝐗𝐈𝐁𝐈𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘 ❗
I was prompted to put some thoughts down after reading a fantastic post from my friend, ex-colleague and first ever boss Garvey Seaton💥 on employee retention and growth.
I have sat quietly and watched as organisations all over the world have made a rapid 180 on their policies around flexibility during the pandemic from 2020 to 2021 - when tech companies in particular were driving massive growth in the employment market, attracting candidates from all over the country (and the world) with promises of flexibility and choice around when, where and how people work.
I also spend a large proportion of my day in contact with the market at its grassroots level, talking to candidates across the full spectrum of experience and seniority who are interested in Kaluza and what we're doing.
❓ Want to know what I've learned? ❓
⌚People are valuing their time more than ever before. The days of candidates being willing to take a role that will force them into 2+ hours of commuting 3-5 days a week are over
✈ Flexibility is key. Not just the flexibility to work from home, but the chance to leverage technology to spend some time working in different countries and take their career with them on their adventures
👫 Work-life balance is now a priority. As a father myself I can firmly now say that no job, no opportunity and, frankly, no amount of money is worth missing out on a single second with my daughter that I don't absolutely have to.
🚶Finally, I've also learned from hundreds of conversations with candidates that if organisations don't wake up to this shift in consciousness, people will vote with their feet.
Thankfully, working for Kaluza means that I don't have to. I have the flexibility to work from home when I need to, and the trust from my incredible leaders to manage my hours across the course of a day in order to work in a way that is best for me AND Kaluza.
I am an early bird, so for me this looks like lots of super early mornings - 6am crew stand up - and finishing at 4pm so that I can go and spend time with my family, or taking some extra time across lunch so that I can train BJJ and not have to sacrifice evenings with my little girl.
Of course, it wouldn't be right to finish this without a shameless plug. Kaluza is without a doubt the best place I have ever worked and if any of the above resonates with you, why not check out our careers site and see if there's a place for you here, too?
