September is here, and it's time to spotlight a critical health issue that profoundly affects the Black community: Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). Let's dive into the facts: 📌 SCD impacts approximately 100,000 Americans. 📌 Shockingly, SCD occurs in about 1 out of every 365 Black or African-American births. 📌 In contrast, it affects only about 1 in every 16,300 Hispanic-American births. 📌 Furthermore, roughly 1 in 13 Black or African-American babies is born with sickle cell trait (SCT). In the fight against SCD, the National Medical Association (NMA) stands as an expert in this crucial area of health. Our dedication to research, advocacy, and support is paramount in raising awareness and improving the lives of those affected. Let's unite, educate, and make a difference this Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Stay tuned for additional information and resources to help us combat this disease together. Juneteenth is an opportunity to reflect on our ongoing commitment to improving health outcomes for all Illinoisians. Through Molina Healthcare’s partnerships with the Chicago South Side Birth Center, Social Change, Herban Grown Chicago, the Black Chamber of Commerce of Southern Illinois, and others, we are bringing wraparound care and education directly to those who need it most, in pursuit of improved health equity and outcomes for all.   Black Illinoisians in particular face disproportionately high rates of diabetes, breast cancer, infant mortality, and other key indicators of health. By partnering with community-based organizations, we can bring resources such as redetermination support, record expungement resources, and health information directly to underserved Illinoisians. Events this month commemorating Juneteenth include the Annual Juneteenth Block Party, a Juneteenth Celebration and Expungement Summit, and the 1865 Juneteenth Fest, and are just a few of the ways through which we empower Illinoisians with the tools for a healthier, more fulfilling life. 

University Hospitals is proud to support the Uterine Fibroid Intervention and Gynecological Health and Treatment (U-FIGHT) Act, which will improve detection and treatment of uterine fibroids, a common condition in women that disproportionately affects African Americans. This legislation not only supports research to help address healthcare disparities, but promotes access to earlier detection of fibroids and less-invasive treatment options, both of which lead to better outcomes and improved quality of life for patients. UH's Manager of Public Policy & Community Health Engagement, Elyse Mulligan, MPH, joined Rep. Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07); Rep. Shontel Brown (OH-11); Jonelle Henry, The White Dress Project; and Corynne Corbett, Black Health Matters in DC to discuss this important legislation. 20-25% of women in their 20s-30s have fibroids. By age 50, 80% of black women and 70% of white women have fibroids. Early detection and awareness can not only improve patient safety and quality of life, but are beneficial from a public health and financial perspective. Celebrating 10 Years of Triumph: A Milestone in My Health Journey Today, May 7th, marks a significant milestone in my life — 10 years of being cancer-free. The journey has been profound, marked by moments of challenge and tremendous growth. My daughter Amber pointed out that today, marked by the number 7, symbolizes completion and perfection in many cultures. Her insight adds an even deeper meaning to this anniversary. This milestone is not just a personal victory but a beacon of hope and a call to action. As a Black man, I've navigated a healthcare landscape fraught with disparities, and my survival is a testament to the critical importance of early detection and advocacy. Reflecting on the Journey: - Early Detection: Prostate cancer, the adversary I faced, is highly treatable when caught early. My experience underlines the importance of regular screenings and proactive health discussions. - Advocacy: Over these ten years, I’ve used my voice to shine a light on healthcare inequalities and to encourage Black men to prioritize their health. Looking Forward: - I am dedicated to continuing my advocacy, ensuring that more men can celebrate similar milestones. Join me in recognizing this day of health and hope. This post really caught me off guard today, yet I thank you for it, Corinne. Today is the Jewish New Year. I'm lucky to be here to celebrate it. For 5 long years, I endured bullying in an environment where my soul underwent a daily beating. Beyond my 90-lb skeleton at the peak of the experience, I was an emotional wreck, but few knew. How often did I contemplate taking the exit out? Literally? More than you could ever imagine. Yet, I didn't tell anyone. The last thing I would have wanted is to be robbed of my last drop of autonomy. To be admitted to an institution against my wishes. To be denied the freedom to make my own decisions. Recently, while rounding in dialysis, I spoke with a patient who could no longer find a reason to live. The psychological suffering had become unbearable. At some point in the conversation, he told me that he dreamed of visiting Gaspésie. His demeanour started to change. And by the end of the conversation, we both came to the conclusion that as long as we're able to dream, perhaps we're not ready to die. I know how rough the healthcare landscape has become. Life itself is full of challenges. Just know that you're not alone. Can you get off the treadmill? Can you walk away from a toxic environment or toxic people? Can you trim away the unnecessary? And focus more on what's working in your life and what's bringing it meaning and joy? If you can, why wait? Go ahead. And try to find that little dream. Lastly, to my fellow colleagues, remember the stigma and the fear of being institutionalized. Be gentle. Build trust. Prioritizing cardiovascular wellness in our lives is profoundly important. As a woman, it’s critical. And as a Black woman, it is imperative that we understand how to assess our risk and take steps to prevent disease. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for women worldwide. In the St. Charles County community, we are committed to raising awareness and providing resources to combat this critical issue. But it’s not a one-size-fits-all concern; there are significant disparities that exist when it comes to heart disease. Data consistently shows that Black women are disproportionately affected by heart disease compared to our White counterparts. Studies show that Black women are more likely to develop heart disease earlier in life and have higher rates of risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. These disparities highlight the urgent need for targeted interventions and culturally competent care to address the unique challenges faced by Black women in managing their cardiovascular health. During Black History Month - and every month - let’s keep the focus on equity and inclusivity in healthcare. We are committed to custom care that acknowledges and addresses the specific needs of all individuals, regardless of race or ethnicity. Together, through education, advocacy and community outreach, we can work towards a future where every woman has the opportunity to lead a heart-healthy life. How are you keeping your heart healthy?
