Learning a wide range of topics in school, even those seemingly unrelated to future careers, serves several purposes. It fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are transferable to various life situations. It provides a broad knowledge base, helping students discover their interests and potential career paths. Subjects like photosynthesis contribute to a well-rounded education, promoting scientific literacy and an understanding of the natural world. While not every topic may directly apply to future careers, the diverse curriculum equips students with a range of skills and knowledge that enriches their intellectual capacity and adaptability in an ever-changing world. #igcse #gcse #ib www.learnfire.org

Unpopular Opinion: We have all had teachers we don’t get along with. But at the end of the day it’s our job as students to make sure we get as much as possible out of each of our lessons. A respectful relationship with teachers is essential for personalised support and guidance. Students don’t need to like all of their teachers, but it’s important to maintain functional working relationships with all teachers. Research shows that the impact of teacher-student relationships on academic performance grows as students get older. The Research: Wentzel, Kathryn R. "Social relationships and motivation in middle school: The role of parents, teachers, and peers." Journal of educational psychology 90.2 (1998): 202. Roorda, Debora L., et al. "The influence of effective teacher–student relationships on students’ school engagement and achievement: A meta-analytic approach." Review of educational research 81.4 (2011): 493-529. #igcse #gcse #ib www.learnfire.org

Past Paper Questions can be an extremely useful study tool but only if you do past papers THE RIGHT WAY. The research paper listed below was published in 2023 and shows that past paper questions can be an extremely useful tool in exam preparation. However, “improper usage of [past exam papers] could be detrimental to [students]”. The Research: Umuerhi, Friday Joseph, and Lucky Oghenetega Urhiewhu. "Jumping the Gun: Relevance of Past Questions Paper." Library of Progress-Library Science, Information Technology & Computer 43.1 (2023). #igcse #gcse #ib www.learnfire.org

Relevant Research Below. It's crucial for students to avoid comparing themselves to friends in terms of study effort for academic assessments. Everyone has unique learning styles, strengths, and external factors that influence their study routine. What works for one may not be suitable for another, and overlooking individual progress and achievements can lead to demotivation. Emphasizing the quality of study over quantity and recognizing the diverse challenges each student faces fosters a positive mindset. Creating an environment that encourages personal growth and acknowledges individual strengths is key to promoting a healthy approach to academic assessments. Relevant Research: Kember*, David. "Interpreting student workload and the factors which shape students' perceptions of their workload." Studies in higher education 29.2 (2004): 165-184. #igcse #gcse #ib www.learnfire.org

Guide your children to prioritise effort over outcomes in assessments. When students solely focus on results, it heightens anxiety. Encourage them to appreciate the journey and the effort invested in understanding the material, fostering a positive learning approach. This mindset shift helps children view challenges as opportunities for growth, reducing stressors. Emphasizing the value of effort builds resilience, decreases anxiety, and instills a mindset that values the learning process. By following this guideline, parents can contribute to their children's improved academic well-being and overall growth. #igcse #gcse #ib www.learnfire.org
