Learning a wide range of topics in school, even those seemingly unrelated to future careers, serves several purposes. It fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are transferable to various life situations. It provides a broad knowledge base, helping students discover their interests and potential career paths. Subjects like photosynthesis contribute to a well-rounded education, promoting scientific literacy and an understanding of the natural world. While not every topic may directly apply to future careers, the diverse curriculum equips students with a range of skills and knowledge that enriches their intellectual capacity and adaptability in an ever-changing world. #igcse #gcse #ib www.learnfire.org

Squash the Shy Scientist Stereotype! Eight years after graduation, only 50% of science graduates are employed in science or technology-related jobs, with the remaining 50% in other professional work outside of the science degree they put so much work into. This is not because of their grades or personalities but the lack of transferrable skills that are not taught to us aspiring scientists. These statistics scared me at first! I had not realised the struggle I would face as a graduate who wanted to put my passion into practice. My course #BScUoN, Professional Employment Skills #SCIE2001 has prepared me with the skill set and knowledge I need to communicate my employability professionally. As a core course in my degree, I initially was not too entertained by the idea of being forced to participate in another mandatory course. However, the skill set I have gained from this course has been immeasurable. Learning how to STAR my skills was my biggest takeaway from this course. STAR is an acronym for Situation, Task, Approach and Result and allows a more coherent structure to paragraphs about my skills. In our first assessment task, ‘elevator pitch’, students were required to pitch themselves in a hypothetical situation of having one minute to present their skills to a potential employer. Initially, I was shocked at my inability to market myself in a way that was coherent and memorable. However, through persistent practice in SCIE2001, I developed my marketing skills using this method, resulting in my elevator pitch receiving excellent marks and feedback from my demonstrator. To all students considering or about to commence #studyingSCIE2001, do it. What I have learnt about marketing myself effectively and professionally has helped me secure a current position in the STEM world, which I may not have been able to achieve without the knowledge I have gained from this course. My confidence in myself has improved drastically, and I am no longer afraid to market myself like the shy scientist I was prior to taking this course.

Executive Producer - DNEG, India (Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore) - Visual Effects, Media, Entertainment | Doctorate Research Scholar @ SSBM
I was thinking about something interesting recently. Have you ever considered how graduation isn't the end of learning but just the beginning? It's like, the moment you toss that cap, it's not a signal to stop absorbing knowledge. It's more like a commencement into a lifelong journey of discovery. Imagine, if someone graduates today and decides that's it, no more learning from tomorrow onwards – it's like becoming uneducated the very next day! Learning is this ongoing, dynamic process, and it's not confined to the walls of a classroom. It's about staying curious, embracing new challenges, and evolving every single day. Life itself is this grand university, and each day is a new lesson. What we learn today shapes who we become tomorrow. Let's stay educated, open-minded, and always hungry for knowledge. #LifelongLearner #ContinuousGrowth #EmbraceCuriosity #StayEducated
